The School/Uni Thread

I, too, am having this early-life crisis. I have no idea what I am going to do, and I don't have enough internships/extra-curriculars to get good jobs. I also can't leave the city, so that limits my options a lot. I need something that pays decent, because I will eventually have to support my mom when she's older.

I'm in graphic/web design and I can only see that industry burgeoning very much in the next 20+ years so I think I'm set for a while...

Plus it helps that I genuinely enjoy it.

Yeah, I think it's probably impossible for most people to end up with jobs they really enjoy. But who said life is easy.

I figure with a liberal arts degree from a good school I shouldn't have trouble finding a job somewhere. I don't know what it will be, but I am not looking for something super enjoyable, just something stable and decent paying. Government or academia is where I am thinking at this point.

Well I think I'm going to turn down the offer to join that fraternity. Too much commitment to add to the existing ones.

However, I was contacted about being a Metal DJ for the college radio station. I've requested more information, but what it looks like so far is a 2-hour time slot each week. I'm asking them what I'll be able to play. They claim no experience is required. It sounds exciting and something I've always been interested in doing.

Has anyone else here DJed radio stations? Any advice?

I've DJed before. I did Top 40 stuff when I did it, but it was still fun. Make sure you have someone in there the first time you do it by yourself to make sure you're doing everything right (this is probably standard procedure at most radio stations anyway). Try to make yourself unique on the air. When I did it, there was a webcam in the studio that I would wave to when I would tell people they could view it online, I inserted subtle jokes when I would do PSAs, etc.

The hardest part of everything is learning the 'board' (fading the song in, etc) and that only took a few hours of studio time.

Try not to play the same songs all the time either. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could do metal somewhere.

Sounds like something I could get used to. And hopefully they'll allow me to use whatever songs I'd like. That way I wouldn't play the same shit all the time.

Well, I would imagine that they would either:

1) Let you play your own shit (most likely)
2) Start ordering samples and demos from bands (less likely)

If not, you could always tell them why it would be better to use your own shit anyway. Also, if there is a website for the radio station complete with webcast, post it here so we can request stuff.

Yeah I am thinking I may have to go to college for some sort of hands-on course to go in the direction I want (media related, film, even game development), but I do not want to spend another 3 years in school after I have already done 4 for university.

lol thanks a lot guys.

*slits wrists*

Edit: I am taking a Business of the Film Industry course, taught by an industry producing veteran so I am hoping this may help me get on the right path toward some sort of career related to my field.

Also, Ozzman I thought you were already employed somewhere since graduation related to accounting or whatever you are into?

I'm employed in a Finance related job within the Insurance industry, but I still don't know if this is what I want to do for the long term. I'm thinking of going back to school now.

What for, you ask?

Either an entirely new degree or an MBA

I went to the station HQ at the student union around noontime and talked with the music director and filled out an application. They don't have metal DJ so they've been advertising openings. I emailed the guy who's going to set me up with a training session and times I can shadow other shows.

I also downloaded and read the manual. Lots of bullshit is required but in the end it seems worth it. Unfortunately, I have to play a bunch of required shit but at the minimum I should still be able to play a lot of my own stuff.

They also like album reviews, and I've already got a few (on the blog) for local acts.

Hopefully I can develop the proper skills for this job. I'm not sure about webcasts, since I didn't read anything about them in the manual. I'll ask about it, though.

I was BASICALLY a DJ...I was one of the place's best metal interns  They let me play whatever I wanted basically, but you do have to play some of the new promos you get in because they take time to send them to you and it costs money and shit.
