The School/Uni Thread

I'm in the middle of writing an epic paper criticizing an antirealist explanation of the success of science for my philosophy of science seminar. This is by far the best class I've ever taken. One of the teachers was trying to convince me to switch to his department (History and Philosophy of Science) after I finish my MA. He even offered to be on my thesis committee! It's nice when people who are smarter than you think you're smart. On another note, grad school is a royal pain in the ass.

So are you thinking about becoming a professor?

I got a 24 score on my ACT and a 3.75 GPA in high school, but it got me no special scholarships or involvement in Honors programs, so I guess it depends on your scores mostly, I think that gpa and organizations should be taken more than a test score but I'm biased.

The ACT is a lame way of weighing a student and is a very one-sided affair. I know plenty of kids who will not be scoring nearly as high as me but yet, they deserve to be in some high ranked schools that I might get into.

The SAT is much harder and "abstract" from what I have heard when compared to the ACT. I might have to take it but I doubt it.

I was poking fun at you saying you got a 24 on the SAT because that test is scored in the hundreds. 24 is a little above average on the ACT I believe. It is a pretty fair test, although maybe a bit too biased towards math. It makes sense because there's no way of knowing how rigorous someone's courses actually were when looking at GPA. This is why standardized data like AP scores are valuable. Class rank also isn't terribly important either, since it could work for or against you depending on the size and relative talent (read: funding) level of your school.

Yes, I had some high scores in the English parts of the test, but Math has never been a strong subject for me and that brought me down, otherwise I may've made 25-28 or so.

Yeah, I take my first few AP tests in about a month or so. The next two years will be filled with those types of classes. I might do an independent study for A.P Russian Lit.

I've been doing pretty shitty in my database theory class since I don't give a fuck about it at all, but we had a group project due this week, and I worked my ass off on it, so I feel a little better about my life now.

I really need to pass this class. It would be pretty godawful to have to stay in Richmond another semester.
