The School/Uni Thread

I've worked as a caddy the last five summers. Last year I made over $6,000 in June-mid-September. I was bringing home $80-$100 per round of golf. Of course a big chunk of that money went towards bills and school expenses.

I miss being 15, when I had no bills, and I could spend all my cash on junk food and video games.

the job I had last summer (a custodian at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada) paid $12/ hour. Horrible job though.

The job I am getting this summer is probably going to be $10/hour. I'm still a student though, so it's no surprise to me that I will get paid so little.

Why do Americans call it school, even when it is college or university level?

School over here basically means up until the age of about 17. Then it's college (and uni) or work.

probably because there's not really a whole lot of differences between "college/uni" and "school". it's just another learning institution. I usually say "I have class today"

While this is true, no one really cares about the semantic differences here. It's just another place you go to learn the same damn basics they've been teaching you for the past twelve years of your life. There is usually little to no true progression of learning in the public school systems (you know, where you are actually interested), most of the time it is usually shit you know because it has been crammed down your throat for the last five years straight (with little variations here and there).

Indeed, but also Americans use the word College to mean University am I right?

Basically.
There are many types of schools here for different vocations. Some go to technical schools, others go to universities which are ultimately specialized in one area or another. Some are public, some are private; all are ridiculously expensive.
Most students and professors usually categorize schools by the degree/certificate programs they offer. Prestige really shouldn't matter...but it does..

Haha. I'm not going to a decent college now! Not for 2 years. But why do I care about that? I was going to a junior college anyway. (It's cheaper and I'm poor.)

Right now I'm at a community college; usually this is a good way to go because whenever you start out at a college, you still have to do general education...the same shit you have been doing for your entire academic career. At the community college level though, EVERYTHING IS CHEAPER. Not only that, but depending on the school, the quality of professors is actually greater than most UC/CSU systems (American undergraduate level). Nearly all of my teachers have their Ph.D's (or Master's, as you are not allowed to teach otherwise), and tuition is at least 4k less than that of the universities. Plus, it is usually all transferable - meaning I get to pay 3x less for the exact same class.

I finished last week, its nice to be able to spend all day downloading and listening to metal :D I had so many essays last week, and I didn't play any music as I was to stressed heh.

That was my final year too, I'm going to apply for a masters though..

Two more weeks left. I'm almost at the light at the end, but god damn it is going to feel like a long fucking time to get there.

Figure I might as well stick my nose in. Im at uni 2nd year studying Economics and International studies. omg im so aloof of you all.

From my experience alot of uni students are knobs, expecially arts ones who study politics and stuff and who crap on about how multinational corporations are making slaves of us all etc... At least at the end of their 3 yr degree they're pretty much unemployable

They get their Comeuppance
