The Top 5 List Thread

@challenge_everything Funnier than his Pesci films? That's a tall order. I definitely need to see it.

RE Cape Fear: I have no problem with the casting or the theme and what it's attempting to do, I just felt the execution left a lot to be desired. In all fairness I've only seen it once so I might have to watch it again and test my current opinion.

Edit: of all the directors who have tried to pierce suburbia for me nothing has topped Lynch.

Somewhat surprised to also see The Departed in your top 5 and quite high within it too, not that it's not an awesome fucking film (though I vastly prefer Infernal Affairs TBH) but I don't think I've ever seen anybody rank it that high. DiCaprio is a great actor.

3 - Shutter Island

Holy shit I totally forgot that's a Scorsese film, I need to actually buy it since I saw it once, at the cinema and that's it. DiCaprio is in it right?

yup. One of my favorite films from the last 10 or so years. The first three movies i have listed there are god-tier imo. And props for putting(rightfully) Casino on top of Goodfellas. I always chuckle when i see people rank it the the other way around.

Goodfellas has Casino beat for memorable/quotable scenes, but Casino is overall just a much better film. I've also always felt that Goodfellas kinda falls apart towards the end, which I guess is somewhat appropriate because so does Henry Hill lol.

It's not really an apt comparison, because After Hours is a straight out comedy whereas Goodfellas, Casino etc are not, and the humour is different (absurdist black humour -it's really a side of Scorsese you won't see anywhere else).

Not sure what you have in mind, it's taut, De Niro is a wonderfully sleazy villain and the finale on the houseboat is great (as is the Simpsons parody).

The acting first and foremost. Nicholson was born to play a character whose ego fills the room. DiCaprio is perhaps even better, his mental unravelling as he is forced to live without an identity really drives the film. The script is also as complex and tight as it comes, though I accept Scorsese doesn't really get the credit for that.

Agreed but you said his funniest, you didn't specify comedy or non-comedy. I think Goodfellas is hilarious at times, whether intentional or not.

I might actually watch it tomorrow after work to refresh my memory.

It's also probably one of Matt Damon's better roles.

comedy ... whereas Goodfellas, Casino etc are not,

Goodfellas is so over the top(on purpose clearly) that i consider it pretty much a black comedy. Are you guys not laughing during most of that movie? If not you're doing it all wrong.

did the "twist" surprise you? I am thinking that's the only way someone could think this movie was any good...but that was the most obvious twist since ..........

i think it did the first time i saw it in the theaters, i honestly cant remember though. But yea i let the acting, writing, cinematography, etc decide what's a good movie or not for me. And as far as im concerned(and most others), it hits a homerun in just about all of those categories. It's an awesome suspenseful/psychological thriller with a little bit of horror and noir sprinkled on top, beautifully shot and acted and just a very solid film overall. What's not to like?
