The Ultimate Modelling Challenge

We're still waiting Jocke!

Yeah, my time for this has been... limited, but today I did try for a short while before I had to go home and I didn't have an IR in the Axe-FX that sounded remotely like Lasse original. However the character of the amps wasn't that hard to get. More of a "default" setting, with lower BIAS. :)

I'll continue tomorrow.

Great idea, IMO. But I have a question....PODs and Axe-FX units have eq blocks that can be added to the internal signal chains. Are POD and Axe-FX users allowed to use these? Or are they limited to just the stomp, sim, cab, mic?

So whatever you do, Lasse, DON'T give out an IR of your miking. :)

Haha, I know I promised you I would (for the Uber-Tweaking)...
and I'm still planning on doing it, it's just too much hassle for me atm to do it...well actually not the "doing it", but the "learning how to"....I still need an idiot-proof step by step guide with all the files (sweeps etc) supplied.
I know, it's all over the web and this forum, but I'll never be using impulses myself, so I was never really interested in finding the info.

Nah, you don't have to. This little test is good enough, or even better because it has more amps included. Since it has the same miking setup, it's really nice to hear the different characters of the amps. I actually overslept, and is spending my day in front of the XBox. :) Should change my nick to "Lazy Bastard", but I don't have the stamina to do it. :D

To me, the debate between sim and real gear is an endless one. So, even if I believe it's almost impossible to replicate the exact same tone (even with a real tube screamer, a real amp, a real cab and a real mic) I gave it a shot just for the fun of it.

RectoChallenge

It sounds pretty good. A little too fat compared to "Mesa Rectifier RevF.mp3"

In real world, too much tube combinations and tube aging. Way too much paramters to simulate.

Alright, think i got it! After some search i found a way to nail the tones maybe to 95%. I used a technique Wild Hades posted years ago.

Here´s the link to the thread:http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy-sneap/355055-best-way-match-eq-impulses-lot-stuff-inside-clips-impulses-images.html

Tried to match the tone of the KrankensteinPlus. Zero EQing!!

My version: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/929252/KrankensteinPlus Match.mp3

It´s my first test. With more effort i´m sure you can make even better tones. I used TSS and 8505 and just realized it would have been better matching the 5150 clip since the 8505 is a 5150 sim.:erk:

ahah!
That's a bit cheating :D
Although it would take the cab and the amp frequency response out of the equation and show if the distortion character is close.

I gave it a go. Couldn't get anywhere near close. But honestly, I don't see the point without making the test more scientific than it is currently.

You will never be able to simulate the warmth of tubes through an ampsim. Tubes are a variable in the chain that's undoable to copy. Ampsims are handy...get you close, but not there..

Gotta love that "You will never..." thing. So human, so sure, and so wrong. Like flying (a while ago for sure but anyway), walking on the moon, "the mp3 format is no threat to the recording industry", Irak has weapons of mass-destruction, and the list goes on. :)

+1.........you cant beat a well mic'ed tube amp......alot of people have gotten great tones with amp sims but digital still sounds digital....the key here is good mic technique and good mic preamps to capture the amps goodness.. a good amp is useless if mic'ed wrong just my thoughts:Smug:

jocke you'Re my man, haha !

btw. i downloaded your "clawfinger irs" that you did with fredrik, havent checked them out yet, are you still using some of those ?

Three of those are in the stock AxeFX cabs. No, I don't use them. I searched for some digital fizz and found that the AD/DA converters in the old Mackie D8B was the reason. All those are made through that desk, unfortunately. :/

Here's a clip of my new toy (still under development).. it's a simulation of the 5150II/6505+ and you didn't have any clips of that amp in the "challenge".. so it's closer to the 5153 than the 5150.. I suck at matching tones anyway
