The Whining and Bitching Thread

See: Picard's speech for Data's right to choose.

"You see, he's met two of your three criteria for sentience, so what if he meets the third. Consciousness in even the smallest degree. What is he then? I don't know. Do you? (to Riker) Do you? (to Phillipa) Do you? Well, that's the question you have to answer. Your Honour, the courtroom is a crucible. In it we burn away irrelevancies until we are left with a pure product, the truth for all time. Now, sooner or later, this man or others like him will succeed in replicating Commander Data. And the decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of a people we are, what he is destined to be. It will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom, expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others. Are you prepared to condemn him and all who come after him to servitude and slavery? Your Honour, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, THERE! IT! SITS! Waiting. You wanted a chance to make law. Well, here it is. Make a good one."

One of the best speeches in television history imo.

Hot damn that is one of the best episodes in all of Star Trek. Another good one is at the end of Legacy:

"In all trust there is the possibility of betrayal...Without trust there's no friendship. No closeness. None of the emotional bonds that make us who we are."
"And yet you put yourself at risk."
{smiling} "Every single time."

There's some stuff before that, but I just love that conversation.

Funny I remember Kafkax being quite snarky himself and being one of the reasons I pulled the pin on this forum before. I guess people really aren't as they come across online, maybe that has something to do with ones expectations as to what they're looking for when they join. Myself I just want good recs and a laugh and don't expect to make friendships, although I guess that would be a bonus. So yeah don't take much of what I say outside of musical discussion too seriously.

I feel like you and I got into some idiotic argument about slam and war metal at some point before you left last time.

My favorite is the speech in The Drumhead.

"You know, there are some words I've known since I was a school boy. With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on... we're all damaged."

Timeline of events:
  • I am hanging with the girlfriend, her sister, and her mother, walking back to her mother's place after a day of Christmas shopping.
  • We all decide to order Chinese food. The "Dinner For Four" deal turns out to be about 11 to 12 bucks for each of us. I get excited.
  • Turns out when we get to her place, that she neglected to mention we would also be feeding her youngest son, a fifteen-year old pothead failure who is pretty much the very definition of "leech".
  • I get quite pissed off, as I am not paying one-quarter of the share when I would be getting significantly less than one-quarter of the dinner, and I make this quite clear to her (her mother is notorious for trying to jew people, moneywise, and has done so to us on a couple occasions, until I wisened up to her bullshit; so I've learned to not let even the smallest, most seemingly-insignificant of things slide with her).
  • The mother gets angry and causes a big argument; then she actually tries to get us each to pitch in MORE so we can get the "Dinner For Five" instead (would come to about 15 or 16 bucks each for the four of us, to feed five; fuck that).
  • I reiterate that I am not paying even a single dime extra to feed her damn son, and quite annoyed, I pretty much tell the girlfriend "fuck this, we're leaving" and we head out.
My patience for this family is wearing quite thin. Her mother knows we are struggling with bills and Christmas, and still she tried to con and deceive us into paying more than is fair. My girlfriend and her sister may not have wisened up to her bullshit, but I have.
