Top 10 2009 Thread

Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II

I thought the Porcupine Tree album was really good until the title track, which sucked, and then the 11 minute song was so poor in comparison to what they usually come up with when they go for long songs. (Anasthetize, Arriving Somewhere..., Russia On Ice are among their absolute best works.) It wasn't ambitious at all by their standards. The B-sides on the second disc were so blah and characterless and samey, which almost can never be said about about PT songs. FoaBP was great, so this massively disappointed me. Just when it seemed like they were getting a better grasp on how to integrate heavy riffs, they got away from it. Also, I thought there was a problem with the mixing where the quiet parts in the interludes were way too soft and hard to hear, which led to some sleepy points where it was hard to hear anything.

I shouldn't have to explain by White Tomb was bad. It's one of the least creative albums I've heard. There are maybe five captivating minutes there. Too many parts that sound completely aped from other bands. It's like the starting point was the sticker on the front that said, "For fans of Wolves In The Throne Room, Isis, Primordial, and Nachtmystium" and then they went and recorded an album. It's not nearly fun enough or well-executed enough to get away with being so unoriginal.

The only song that disappointed me was "Time Flies".

Time Flies was really not good, and most of the interludes were a waste of time. I thought the back half was mostly poor by the band's standards. Also, I had almost no clue what was going on with the concept. I didn't do excessive amounts of background reading, but it seemed pretty obtuse beyond the central car crash. That part is a pretty terrible song, so maybe I'm missing something every time I skip it.

But Blind House through Drawing the Line is very good.

I will agree with a few of the interludes being a waste of time but i enjoyed The Incident as a whole. A few songs off the back half really struck me as great imo. Especially Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Flicker.

I haven't been impressed with anything Porcupine Tree has released since Lightbulb Sun. In Absentia was pretty good and Deadwing had a few decent tracks, but since then, I haven't been particularly wowed by them

I'm re-listening to Deadwing and FoaBP tonight, and these albums are >>>>>>>>> The Incident. It especially stands out how badly produced it is.

I might also be the only person who thinks Fear Of A Blank Planet is their best album.

Title Track was the best part of the album, along with Circle of Manias and Blind House. But yes, I think Time Flies is the weakest song overall, especially when compared to Anesthetize in terms of long tracks. If that epic was on The Incident, the album would of been ****ing godly.

First off - this wasn't "collected" by me. I just copy pasted from a private metal forum I frequent. So no, I guess it wasn't necessary. But I don't think many posts on this forum really are. Was your post really necessary?

And yeah, of course there are bands missing - like Katharsis. Actually I stated earlier in this thread that Katharsis would be my pick for best album of 2009.
