Top 10 2009 Thread

1. Arckanum - ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ

Originality is overrated when you can write music as good as this. Straight up, no bullshit, riff after great riff, topped off by the most perfect BM sound quality imaginable.

2. Austere - To Lay Like Old Ashes

This album has its weak moments, but when it hits the mark, it provides the musical highlights of 2009 for me. Unusually epic and strangely uplifting for a depressive/suicidal BM album, Austere succeed in adding something new to the genre and provide a rare example of a band who not only drink at the well of inspiration that is Burzum, but learn the lessons of atmosphere and song development while they're at it.

3. Katatonia - Night is the New Day

More gorgeously fragile and subtle melodies from Katatonia. The riffs aren't quite as good as previous albums, but Jonas Renske is in career best form here.

4. The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm

The most reliably awesome band in death metal does it again. I still need more time to absorb this, so it could potentially rise ever higher in my estimation.

5. Thy Catafalque - Róka Hasa Rádió

Hands down the most original release of the year, this spacey post-black-trance-death-whatever album sounds as utterly foreign as your first listen of Negura Bunget. Has its flaws in the songwriting department, but succeeds in sounding fresh without being forced or gimmicky.

6. Katharsis - Fourth Reich
7. Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II
8. Beherit - Engram
9. Skagos - Ast
10. Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs

Song of the year:
Austere - This Dreadful Emptiness

Disappointment of the year:
Nazxul - Iconoclast

"Legion of the Damned - Cult of the Dead" is not a 2009 release. Other then that, one of the greatest metal albums to come out of 2008.

.....Hmmm,2009 has really been a year for Death metal & frankly I had not enough time to look for other genres.
In black metal I liked the new "Weapon" very much(still gotta here Arckanum,Beherit & Teitanblood though)
And in case of doom I only liked the new "Church of misery",if anyone can direct me to some other new doom that would be good.....
