Top 5 Drummers of all time

I second that NFU.

You guys really need to get out more. There are hundreds and thousands of drummers far better than Lopez, Barker, Carey, Gene, Portnoy etc...

For instance, this guy from Into the Moat slays these drummers, and even he wouldn't be in my top 5 list of best drummers of all time. And even still there are lots and lots of drummers on par or better than this guy.

.....not....even...

Well, probably not "slay" Carey or Hoglan or I guess Portnoy, They're all fucking good drummers, ok, but my point is their isn't anything they can do that an average studio musician can't. There are many many upon many drummers on par with Neil Peart, you know? Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colauita, and Horacio Hernandez would be good choices for a top 10.

It's not because you can play all of Lateralus that you're as good as Danny Carey. Far from it actually. There are loads of drummers who are technically way better than Portnoy, Carey or Peart. However, most of those guys do nothing but practice polyrhythms and complex patterns, and never understand what it's like to write a good song or a good drum pattern.

For example: Virgil Donati. This guy can do anything you ask him to on the drums, anything. He also wrote an album, called "Into The Virge". It's packed with 17/16 pattern, ostinato's etc. The songs however, suck ass. I'm not saying technical writing is wrong (eg: Spastic Ink is almost as technical, but it sounds great!), but the quality of the song has to be the primary focus.

I'm just saying that drummers like Virgil, Marco Minneman, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, are primarily drummer's drummers. They have flawless techique, but when it comes to actually making songs, these guys have a lot to learn.

My list:

- Jeff Porcaro (Toto, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen)
- Jack DeJohnette (Keith Jarrett, Steve Coleman)
- Stéphane Galland (Aka Moon, Axelle Red, Zap Mama)
- Danny Carey (Tool offcourse)
- Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Morgenstein/Rudess, Platopus).
- Bobby Jarzombek (Halford, Spastic Ink, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards)

Why the hell are people as stupid as to make the thread title top 5 drummers of all time? Just make titles with top 5 favorite drummers cause otherwise it'll cause nothing but bullshit. Posting a top 5 drummers of all time list would suggest that only people with incredible drummer knowledge in all genres should be allowed to post, and that would probably only be a couple or even no people at all from this forum.

a decent top 5 of all time;

- ginger baker
- buddy rich
- mitch mitchell
- keith moon
- john bonham

there are others (see below), of course, but, we're talking of all time and while you might be able to substitute a handful (or less) from the list below, the list above is decent.

- louie bellson
- elvin jones
- roy haynes
- steve gadd
- jack dejohnette
- tony williams
- neil peart
- terry bozzio
- ringo starr
- bill bruford
- billy cobham
- gene krupa
- papa jo jones

I agree completely, they're not good "songwriters" whatsoever, I just went by a criteria of technique, skill, percision, etc...
