Are there any mainstream bands that are considered good/acceptable here at UM? When I was young I listened to some gateway metal bands such as Slayer and Sepultura..but today I can't stand listening to nearly any of those mainstream bands..

However I recently listened to Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera after god knows how many years..and man it's such a great album despite my current "refined" taste in metal!

I think people only have an attitude towards *modern* mainstream bands. Plenty of people still worship Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. Personally I think that popularity and musical awesomeness only became mutually exclusive after such bands used up all the great yet accessible ideas.

Seriously though, if you can't listen to Slayer's first 3 albums, wtf is wrong with you :)

Don't get me wrong, I'll still rock out to Slayer, (not Sepultura tho) but I find a vast majority of their songs to be very..unattractive today as opposed to what I thought over a decade ago.

And I agree a lot with this..Iron Maiden is practically praised by nearly every metal head, whereas a band like Slipknot is getting scorned by a thick slice of the metal community

please start listing bands and we will tell you whether you can listen to them or not.

LMAO well the only one I'm curious about is Pantera...they are probably the one band that has stuck with me since my toddler metal years..The only thing they could've used is a better drummer..not that Vinne Paul is a bad drummer, but he definitely could've fleshed out his playing! The only time he really shines is in Becoming

It's pretty much a given that if you like any albums from a band that happen to sound different from the band's early releases, your taste automatically sucks.

huh ?

I'm not sure right now if that makes any sense or am just tired.

I think ozzman was trying to make a funny about pantera's rather uh marked shift in music sound (not like dark throne, immortal or countless other bands shifted their sound but whatever)

I think there's a pretty decent acceptance towards mainstream metal and even metalcore. I know there are quite a few users here who actively listen to metalcore and things of that nature, but I don't think you'll generally see any of the more "traditional" metalheads here listening to it.

Fenriz had a problem with Florida Death Metal bands wearing shorts and T-Shirts(all the bands wore Belly shirts), which is why Darkthrone did not want to play DM anymore.

I think most people here like many commercially succesful metal bands... Metallica, Slayer, Maiden, Priest, etc. at least in terms of their best releases.

I actually find Darkthrones music incredibly boring shitty and tedious, the band cares to much about image and sounding/playing a certain way because of a genre, bands, people, and care to much on how they are perceived for me to really take them serious other than the fact they do nothing with their instruments, but really they actually suck hard and are about as interesting as a rock.

I like the early BM albums they did... those are pretty badass. I never follwed them after those albums... and the few songs I've heard since then were awful.

Fenriz has always been outspoken (and at times outrageous), but he also has a cool side, watch the video where he speaks to a german journalist over the phone regarding techno music! Fenriz isn't all super macho black metal elite
