I'd like to know which genre you associate Opeth with. Please provide a (preferably) detailed explanation.

Hmm, the progressive elements are quite apparent, but I am interested in what death metal elements you see.

Well, at some points i hear "extremely fast drumwork"
Opeth is a death metal band from Sweden. Opeth adds some progressive elements to their music, with classical guitar and influences from jazz and acoustic music. Some people like to give them their own genre, Melodic Death Metal, or sometimes Forest Metal. The name was taken from the book Sunbird (1972) by author Wilbur Smith, and was originally spelled Opet. In the book, Opet is the city of the moon.

Death metal is usually identified by extreme brutality and speed. The vocals, or growls, as they're often called, are rough and/or incomprehensible and they usually communicate macabre subject matter. This style of music is known for very abrupt tempo and count changes, and extremely fast drumwork. Most bands of this use guitars and drums, often two rhythm guitars, a bass guitar, a drum set, and a vocalist. Some bands add incidental synthesizers for effect. Lyrics tend towards extreme, unpopular worldviews and profound violence. The intense focus on morbidity likely inspired the naming of this genre as "Death" metal.

Extreme progressive death metal. That's what Peter said, and I think it makes the most sense. It doesn't really matter, though, as categories don't really matter. "Extreme" refers to the... uh... extremity of their music, "progressive" to the elements of other music genres in their music, and "death metal"... :)
