What Genre Is Opeth?

Have any of you ever toured a concentration camp?

I did, and I will NEVER, ever forget. It's obviously not anything like having gone through the Holocaust yourself--but believe me, that experience WILL make a mark on you, to actually BE in the place where so many people died for no other reason than they happened to be the "wrong" ethnicity.

As if what happened during the Holocaust didn't already revolt and infuriate me before I saw that place, it does even more so now. And no, before anyone asks, none of my ancestors endured the Holocaust. "You don't have to be a Jew to disapprove of murder." (Quote from Roger Waters, favorite songwriter of Martin López.) All you have to be is human. And that's why I think people should show a bit more respect to those who suffered through that hell.

That was very well said.

Iridium--why don't you take your hatefulness elsewhere? And even if it's not "hatefulness", it's most certainly callousness and poor taste to a disgusting degree.

That would be "hatred," actually. I swear that I do not hate any of you or any person, people, inanimate object or group of objects discussed in this thread. :)

That oven is way too small.

Sorry mate, it was the only one I could find on such short notice.

No.

You know, I'm really touched by how much you were touched.

You obviously have not gone through that hell, neither has abcdefg - I reserve the right not to act the same way toward people I talk to on online forums as I would toward actual Holocaust survivors. However, not being able to take a joke, is an offense far harsher than that I have committed.

I disagree.

In conclusion, quit bitching - I have no nazi or neo-nazi sympathies, while I do sympathize with Holocaust survivors and their families. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with joking about this topic, or any other you may find offensive.

Finally, this has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Carry on.

As UltimateMetal's Token Jew, I am not offended by that. I respect Rose_Immortal's dedication to humanism and thank him/her (not sure) for being sensitive, but unneccessary political correctness is far more of a scourge than tasteless jokes.

On topic, Opeth strikes me as melodic death mixed with a healthy dose of 70s prog rock and maybe a bit of the Grateful Dead...and a big chunk of suck, of course. :p

My problem with characterizing them with death metal is that they lack the chaotic song structures/ riff patterns that are a basic requirement for death metal, and never convey death metal themes in their songs. The only death metal thing about them is the vocals. I think "elevator music" works well, though.
I find most 'death' to have quite rudimentary song structures. This is the first time I've heard somebody say that Opeth's song structures aren't as chaotic as another style's, seeing as that's usually the main complaint with Opeth. That being the fact that they are too chaotic.

I'm not sure what you mean about riff patterns though. If you're reffering to tonal intervals, time signatures, disharmony and such, then Opeth do share quite a bit with DM. They quite frequently refference themselves as 'Death metal', so I figure at the very least, they would understand which aspects of the Death metal genre they are borrowing from.

Not sure what you mean with elevator music either.

I stick with Flower Metal :)

Rudimentary song structures in DM? o_O I dunno what the fuck you're listening to...even more well-known bands like (early) Morbid Angel and Vital Remains are chaotically structured, both in the individual riffs/parts and the way they are fit together. For some real death chaos, try Necrophagist, Demilich, or Vomitory.

Opeth isn't really chaotic so much as disjointed...firmly structured individual parts and riffs hooked together in sequences that lack transition and order. It's not chaos, it's not structure, it's...well, it's unique, I'll give them that much.

This is subjective - I meant they are very structured, and in a very predictable manner.

I doubt it's up to the task.
