What Genre Is Opeth?

My problem with characterizing them with death metal is that they lack the chaotic song structures/ riff patterns that are a basic requirement for death metal, and never convey death metal themes in their songs. The only death metal thing about them is the vocals. I think "elevator music" works well, though.

The best description for Opeth's music is Opeth. I have yet to here one other band that incorporates so much variety in one song.

If I had to I'd say it's a mix of Metal/Progressive/Psychadelic Rock, that incorporates styles of jazz, folk, black metal, death metal, and classical music.

Haha. Anyone remember when Century Media was trying to market them as a black metal band? They had them on the Firestarter compilation and they were putting their shit out under the Century Black label.

Not funny or creative.

I only hear two styles in every Opeth song.

Jazz? No - there is no improvization going on. Folk? Possibly, though I don't think I've heard any songs where I detected folk influence. I don't know where the hell you're getting black metal from - they don't have a single thing in common. Vocally, Opeth occasionally sound like death metal. Opeth do not incorporate song structures or instruments common in classical music, so claiming they use any classical motifs is a fallacy.

Iridium, you have pretty much dismissed everyone's opinions about the genre that Opeth fits into...and since you started this topic, you may as well enlighten us all with your conclusion.

The universe does not run on opinions. I'd group them under modern progressive metal, with harsh vocals.

My comment on the genre of Opeth being Opeth wasn't supposed to be funny or creative. It makes a point, and to me they incorporate those elements.

What do you mean "to me?" They either incorporate them or they do not - there is no wishful thinking involved.

Iridium is making a lot of sense. A lot of people herald Opeth as the be-all and end-all of 'variety' in metal, whereas this is completely unfounded. Maybe it's just the fact that a lot of people dont know what they're on about.

Furthermore I find it disheartening that nobody backs up what they have to say - blurting out a genre name alone is pointless, name some examples.

there's definatley some pat metheny can be heard from some mikeal's solos, so let's face it, jazz incluences right there

in your face, beotch

Oh, really? Well, since you are using broad, general statements, I will too: there's definitely Cradle of Filth influence in some of the riffing. Moreover, the principal element of jazz is improvization - I have never heard any in Opeth's songs.

I think you're in the wrong place, Juden.

Iridium--why don't you take your hatefulness elsewhere? And even if it's not "hatefulness", it's most certainly callousness and poor taste to a disgusting degree.
