What the hell was Arch Enemy thinking???

"Black Earth" is pretty OK, innit? Not that I've heard the whole thing, but "Bury Me An Angel" is very classy thrash.

I don't care for the newer releases. Too much wankery.

Really? I thought people were complaining that they were too dumbed down?

The music to the older stuff is good, but jesus, Johan Liiva has got to be one of the worst vocalists to grace this earth. He sounds like he's having a colostomy (and enjoying it).

Can I ask - what made you keep going back for more each time? You only have to put your hand in the fire once you know!
I kept thinking I was missing something. Plus, a lot of people swear by Black Earth, so I thought if I got the band's supposed best release, it might click. It didn't.

I do enjoy some songs by AE, there very best being the song "Black Earth" off Stigmata.

I bought WoS because the band got a new vocalist, so I was hoping I'd finally start to like AE, but lo and behold, while the new vocalist was a bit better, the music was a lot worse. I'll stick with AE members' previous bands.

ARCH ENEMY Singer Addresses Sellout Accusations: 'We Want To Bring Our Music To Everybody' - Sep. 1, 2003
ARCH ENEMY singer Angela Gossow recently spoke to Katie Vrabel of the Valley Advocate about accusations of sellout from some of the group's "fans," allegations that come with even modest success for an underground band. Of the band's "new" sound, which is really not far removed from their old, Gossow said, "People criticize, but, yeah, we are aiming for being more mainstream. We are aiming for some more money, because you have to live. I mean, I live in a super-small flat, sharing it with my little sister. I'm 28 — how long do I want to do this?

"People just complain when SLIPKNOT fans get into ARCH ENEMY, because they want to have this elitist thing, like: 'This is my band — I don't want to share it with nu-metal kids.' But we want to bring our music to everybody, and we want people to love the music, buy our albums and support the band. It doesn't mean we are turning into NICKELBACK. I haven't seen us on heavy rotation on MTV, so I guess we haven't really sold out that badly. People don't really see which way it goes. Either a band exists and they are going to need to make some money with it, or the band is not going to exist anymore."

Gossow joined ARCH ENEMY in time to record 2001's "Wages of Sin" but was not involved with the writing process. Things have changed dramatically since then, and ARCH ENEMY has just released a new album, "Anthems of Rebellion".

"I just joined right before 'Wages of Sin', so that wasn't really my music," said Gossow. "I liked it a lot, but I wasn't involved in the whole process, I didn't understand how the things came together, how this band was working. I found out later that this band wasn't really working together before I joined. They were like a project. They had been more like five individual people getting together to make some music and then running off to do their other projects, and now it's like it's a band, a good team. Everybody has got his job in the band and his place, and it works really well."

Three years, world tours, hundreds of shows and countless interviews later, Gossow says there is still the girl-in-a-band crap to deal with: "I hear the: 'Oh, they just got that chick in the band because it's a good gimmick thing,' but that doesn't work. If you are in a band like us, we tour we're going to play 250 shows. If it was a gimmick I would already be out of the band. Because it's tough, and not only for females. It's tough on everybody, and a lot of people leave bands because they can't stand touring. Here I've been in the band for three years, I'm working my ass off, I get sick on every fucking tour, I do it anyway. I've given up my job, my old life — I just moved for this band. I mean, how much more can you do for a band?"

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......sellouts.

I didn't know there were different degrees of sell-out status.

This thread is old hat, but I have to say, "diabolical_muff" is the funniest pseudonym I've seen in ages.

So miss muff, just how diabolical is it? :loco:

If the bonus CD on Wages of Sin is anything to go by, he's very dull and naff :p the Furbowl song seems ok so far....meh...hm........

The new Terrorizer sums up the Arch Enemy album perfectly for me. The review calls it a nice slab of commercial metal.

The new Nevermore is called a modern metal marvel.

Both reviews were right on for me. I'd put them in the thread, but I'm too lazy. Maybe later.

Alright so I listened to about half of Anthems last night... I liked it. I'll probably like it more upon further listening, I like how they tossed aside the pop song structure of Wages of Sin. Less complex song writing, but less accessible too, so that's fine with me.

Sellout talk is poppycock, but it always is. Who cares if Angela is at the forefront of the band photos? I'd rather look at a hot bird than some ugly metal dude any day!

The sellout talk is not poppycock. Angela admitted to it.
The dangerous thing about journalism and reading quotes is that you can read the same thing in different ways.

'This is my band — I don't want to share it with nu-metal kids.' But we want to bring our music to everybody, and we want people to love the music, buy our albums and support the band. It doesn't mean we are turning into NICKELBACK. I haven't seen us on heavy rotation on MTV, so I guess we haven't really sold out that badly.'

"I guess we haven't really sold out that badly" can be read in multiple ways. She could either be confirming that as a statement, or she can be saying it in a smug, sarcastic, condescending way.

One of the first things you're taught in communications skills is the line: "Mary had a little lamb". It has multiple interpretations. Count them.

But at the end of the day, who gives a fuck.

I'll never understand how an extreme metal band can retain guitar solos and growled vocals and still "sellout."

I read Angela's quote, and I still don't quite buy it, or at least not to the extent that the typical metal fan does: "ohhhh, yous guys sold out, you suuuuuuuuuuuck!!!" People change and musical tastes change. If Arch Enemy wants more exposure to make more cash, so be it. But I don't see it with Anthems.

OK, forget about the magazine quote in which she admitted to selling out. Some of her responses in the AE forum say the same thing.

A band can still have guitar solos and growled vocals and still sellout.

Here is a quote from Angela in their forum, in response to this stupid article that has been cut and paste 3 million times...

Right. We incorporated lots of synths and loops, I quit screaming and singing melodíc and poppy instead and besides, its all soft rock tunes on the album, no thrash and deathmetal in it at all. We will definitely be on heavy rotation on mtv for the next months, headline big theaters and sell 250.000 copies in the first week.

Have you ever fed your family with PERSEVERANCE? there are little kids attached to some in the band. Reality check. Why did the Soilwork drummer quit? He couldnt feed his family. Cuz when you are on tour 200 or more days a year, you cant have a regular job as well. Why did Johan quit Nonexist? Cuz he cant have a job and 2 bands (which are never touring, btw) at the same time.

I didnt say we sold out. I said we are aiming to gain more success, and more success is mainstream. It doesnt mean our music will turn into mainstream. It means, we are becoming a very seriously orientated band now who wants to reach all kinds of METAL fans. Broaden our fanbase within the METAL fans. Selling more METAL albums. Playing more METAL shows. Being able to make a living out of METAL. Like SLAYER. SLAYER. SLAYER.

Angela
And by the way, Anthems of Rebellion just happens to be a very good album.

Good for her.

I just don't understand, for a metal band to maintain credibility you have to a) spread your demo to multiple labels like wildfire b) play your ass off 300+ shows a year and then c) burn your first big paycheck.

What exactly does one sellout to if the band retains the extreme metal edge?
