Your Favorite Viking/Folk Metal Band

Awesome!

EDIT: Apparently Turisas are in the studio working on their third record. I know lots of people here might not care, but I for one harbor a soft spot for Turisas.

Why does so much folk metal sound like over-the-top "epic" stupidity?

My opinion is that the last 10 years or more bands have tried to make "something new", "something diffrent" and always with a touch of "make it commercial as fuck so its easy to sell" wich ended up in alot of the crap that comes out these days. The year Finntroll got big something bad happened.

I do like bands like Windir, Moonsorrow, Elite, Istapp and the old ones like Storm, Isengard etc. (the ones i could think of in a hurry) Tho i find it hard to get myself building up hope now days that new stuff in this genre actually is something worth checking out.

I've been listening to Manegarm's Vargstenen and it's a very good album. And they don't sound like damn pussies, it's viking Metal with nice BM elements. The folkish parts don't bother me, as happens with some other bands (like russian Arkona imo).

They do sound epic.

I find Viking metal actually easier to 'take seriously' (if that means anything) than folk metal. But folk metal is awesome. The genre is responsible for some of the best melodies in heavy metal and everything under its umbrella. If you don't believe me and would like examples of some intense melodic folk metal, listen to the album Sagas by the band Equilibrium.

Equilibrium are great fun and I like Sagas and Turis Fratyr, but a lot of their keyboard hooks are just so corny that I'm embarrassed to have it playing when I have company over. A shame Helge left.

Turis Fratyr is catchy; it's one of my guilty pleasures in metal. Sagas is just downright awful in my opinion. I feel embarrassed listening to it even when I'm by myself. There is way, way better folk metal than Equilibrium. If you don't understand this, you are a noob.

Mr. Lady Hater did mention he just found them in the past couple days.

Sagas is marginally more embarrassing than TF but I do like "Blut im Auge" because I wrote gay porn about Lord of the Rings characters way back when and that part of my personality still exists somewhere. Also, I have a big boner for Helge Stang so I think I am extra forgiving in that regard. Needs a straight perm though.

Stuff like Tenhi, is that considered "neofolk?"

How the fuck can you justify that Cythraul? Sagas is worlds better than TF. And I don't find either one 'embarrassing". In fact, the only time I have ever been embarrassed while listening to metal has been listening to Tony Kakko sing about women's underwear LOL. What awful lyrics he writes sometimes.

And Krampus, how am I a lady hater exactly? I simply said I am not abl eto take bands seriously if they have female members (especially attractive ones) because it's all commercial marketing ploy. Do you really want to tell me that commercial exposure wasn't a factor in AE bringing Angela into the band? Give me a break.

You do realize in that statement you sigged (thanks, btw) when I said 'you' I meant 'you all' as in, 'your band', not you individually or personally. :)

The music is dominated by syrupy keyboards and totally obvious hooks. There's nothing interesting or new about it. It's not fundamentally different from any other Casio "folk" metal. Plus it's totally flaming. It would be a fantastic soundtrack to a gay cruise. That's not to say that TF is challenging or very interesting in any way or something. It's poppy as well, but way less annoying and over the top.
