Controversial Opeth Opinions

Obama sucks because he does not like Opeth. I voted for Ron Paul, and I went to a tea party. To bid you farewell is the song that I want to play to inspire the socialist cocksucker to step down. And no, I am not a Republican either. I am a Libertarian who loves this country. And unlike Janeane Garofalo thinks about everyone that went to the tea parties, I am not a racist redneck. My wife is Mexican, and my step father was Will Robinson, the first black college basketball coach in history. I do not have one drop of racist blood in my body. I would really like her to be the female character in Deliverance as I drown her in the sea.

The only criticism I have for Opeth is that they do not tour enough.

Peace

More power to you! I think that most intelligent conservative-minded youngsters can't be bothered with the social conservatism of their parents. All Republicans are about nowadays is what they don't like, i.e. gay marriage and abortion. I think that the asskicking they've gotten in the last two elections (2006 and 2008) shows that this isn't working, and that the right has to return to its fundamental principles of small government and individual liberty.

Here in Canada, the ruling Conservative government passed a massive budget, and PM Harper has created the largest cabinet ever. His budget even got the approval of the (non-seated) leader of the Green Party. I think both countries are primed for a stronger libertarian presence. On the other hand, people might decide that they like highways and libraries and stuff.

Oh yeah, um. Controversial opinion. . . the next album WILL be worse than Watershed.

I'm not sure about your opinion here. Are for in favor of the Conservative government or against?

There is too much about the conservative government that I don't like. Who else would appoint a minister for science and technology who first says he doesn't believe in evolution, then makes it clear that he doesn't even know what it is when he tries to clarify? I'm not really a conservative guy myself, but I've got some friends who are and they're pissed about the budget. Mostly what I was saying is that Harper and the Tories' gamesmanship shows they don't have much in the way of principles. I guess that's the case for most of our politicians up here.

Yeah totally agree with your point of view. I don't know in which province you live, but most people in Quebec are against conservative, except people who have more money and old people.

Save for MAYH & Still Life, all of Opeth's lyrics are complete nonsense.

lol MAYH lyrics are nonsense, they're just poetic nonsense so some people actually buy into it. Still Life's follow the trend properly, I'll give you that, but despite the concept factor they're still weak for other reasons. Like..when I want to show someone Opeth, I would want to show them a good ballad but I shy away from showing them Face of Melinda or Benighted because the lyrics are so cheesy. The Baying of the Hounds, Heir Apparent, and the Lotus Eater have pretty good lyrics.

The baying of the hounds! I still have no idea what that is about. Seriously. Someone here, right now, give me a brief, one sentence summary of that song.

Yep, thats right, fuck your mouth

It's about Diana and her running from the hounds... you know?

The first clean part talks about how when you're struggling or whatever you typically turn to Satan/evil/bad stuff because you're willing to believe it can be good for you (receptive to stark wishes or something like that in the song) because you really don't feel you have anything else to believe in. The last heavy part of the song is the concept album's character embracing said "bad things" for this exact reason. Though I'll admit the first growling verse and the first mellow clean part "drown in the deep mire, blah blah blah" and the growling part after that are sorta nonsense, but that's just because they're going back to these "key words" in the album to maintain the theme (the hounds, the mire, um...satan? idk). I mean that's about half awesome half meh on the lyrics, and that's pretty damn good for an Opeth song. I mean even on Still Life you get a little nonsense; the acoustic verses of Moonlapse Vertigo are somewhat nonsensical, you have to make a few stretches to make the lyrics on Godhead's Lament make sense with the album, Serenity Painted Death's chorus is just a bunch of metal words and some semi-fancy words Mike could have gotten out of a thesaurus or something mashed together (not to mention how Face of Melinda, Benighted, and some of Godheads Lament is just straight cheese)

haha ok it's your opinion that I'm retarded. I have the same opinion of you. But rather than posting an unfunny macro, i'll explain my opinion to you.

Watershed is a decent album. I didn't say I don't like Watershed. Most actually share this opinion; only two or three songs on the album are "very good" (Heir Apparent, Hessian Peel, and, barely, Burden). Coil, Hex Omega, and Porcelain Heart are all quite mediocre by Opeth's standards. I would say that Opeth and Metallica are my two favorite metal bands. Thus I measure them by similar standards. So that's three good songs out of seven for Watershed.

This is where my opinion may be dismissed; the proportion of good songs to shit songs is higher for Death Magnetic than Watershed. I can honestly say I enjoy almost all of the songs on Death Magnetic (except Unforgiven III, Broken Beat & Scarred, The Day That Never Comes). Death Magnetic has better riffs, better structures, and is, generally, a lot more coherent than Watershed. I would even say the solos and lyrics are marginally better on DM, but that's not saying much because the solos and lyrics on both of these albums are pretty much shit (except Mike's solos of course). So seven good songs out of ten for DM.

7/10 > 3/7 = Death Magnetic wins...understand now?

While I still think Baying is lyrically BS, I have to give you props for trying to put the pieces together! Seriously! Regardless of the lyrics though, it is still a beautiful track.

And I feel the lyrics in Still Life are appropriately convoluted and overly poetic. If they said everything literally, the Face of Melinda would read:

"My bitch Melinda, she's married to some other guy. But you know, it's alright. I'm okay with it."

Frankly those lyrics wouldn't meet the beautiful/brutal standard that Opeth's music creates :p

Thanks for explaining.

Usually when someone mentions any of the new metallica albums I assume they are trolling big time, but it seems that there was sincerity in your post.

but, i cant see how you would actually like the solos on DM.
I like metallica, and i like kirk hammett, but DM isnt exactly displaying why they have their own guitar hero, if you get what i mean.

Once sentence? Okay...

It's a description of the entity, that we could call the Devil, that possesses the main character and it shows how it can charm you (and fool you) and look appealing and recomforting.

Am I right?

That's not controversial, it's the truth. Didn't Mikael say that all songs are part of a concept, except Isolation Years, which was basically tagged on.

Essentially yes, but I have heard that the songs have been reordered in a way which is completely unrelated to the concept.

That sounds interesting! But whats it got to do with pest-ridden tacos?

Per Wiberg is really David Isberg who came back to Opeth but didn't want to be recognized. He was the singer originally but after 13 years of practicing the keys Mikael accepted him back and even allowed him to do background vocals during gigs out of nostalgia. Notice the similarity in the last names? What a futile attempt to cover it all up.
