Doom Project! Sunn o))) inspired!

Ok ,
to get the ball rolling, my first contribution,

http://www.mediafire.com/file/vteyv1inntt/ShaneK_DronePiece1.wav

24bit, 44.1kHz

A 9 minute droning Synth Bass track on which i could see a whole tune being built.
the "chord" is an A and A#, but the pitch drifts all over the place anyway.

I think we could easily build up a piece around this part.

EDIT: here is my idea for how we could go about working this project,
each member does as i have done, and creates a nice long track that could serve as the beginnings of a song,
then hand that track on to another member who adds their part and so on to the next member, each saving their own tracks for the final mixdown.
I'd imagine Muckypup will want to do the final comping and mixdown for the whole project.

that way everyone starts a track, and everyone contributes.

for example (with fake names):

Song1:
-Joe starts
-Mick adds
-Dave adds

Song 2:
-Mick starts
-Dave adds
-Joe adds

Song 3:
-Dave starts
-etc.......

Mucky could easily draw up a list of contribution sequences.

I honestly think this would be the most fair and egalitarian, and creativly open way of operating.
the Ninjam idea is also cool, but i could see that becoming a real mess very quickly, and would be hard to get any real work done.

of course, it comes down to Muckypup to decide. :)

Well the Ninjam thing might work if it was small groups of people (I'm talking 3 or 4 at max), but yeah Shane (if that's your name?) I was thinking of something just like what you said, I already recorded a piece of distorted bass, still uploading to dropbox and downloading yours to have a listen (my internet's pretty slow, it'll be like an hour to upload my .wav).

For mine, I would really like some drums done, I might even program some but some real ones would sound much better

Yep, I'm Shane :)

I will download yours and have a listen when its done, post the link up here.

we need to wait for Muckypup to chime in with whatever he thinks is the best way to go.

As i said, Ninjam could be cool, but with Work, Mixing and other commitments, plus the fact that some of us live on opposite sides of the world from each other, i don't think there is any practical chance of it working out.

maybe we can organize only europe people first? I mean, you, muckypup, gareth and I are all in the same time zone, we might be able to work something out, my only problem is that internet at my folk's place (I'm living with my grandmother currently, no webs there) has been failing on me terribly lately. But sometime soon we could do it, for now I think your approach could be really good.

Still uploading btw lol

My sympathies :)

i had shitty internet for years, aweful stuff.
is there an internet cafe near where you live? it may be worth making a trip there once per week to down/up/load big files.

anyway, even besides timezones, people gotta work, i got 3 mix projects ongoing and more about to come in, i bet other people have projects that need attention.

real-time collaboration would be cool in an ideal world,
but i can only guess that whatever one contributes to this project will be done in "spare time".

I think the method i suggested would be fair on everyone involved, and allow people to work at whatever pace they can, rather than having to cancel movie-night with the wife/girlfriend/boyfriend so they can jam over a (potentially) laggy internet connection.

I also think that the Ninjam method would be prone to being dominated by a handful of strong personalities, and may not allow everyone to contribute in a meaningful and artistically satisfying way.

So, pending Muckypups approval i think we should draw up a "Team Roster", which will list the collaborators for each song.
everyone gets to start a song, and everyone gets to contribute, all the while sending rough mixdowns on to each other while keeping high-res bounces of their own parts.
we could sort out some space to store the ongoing work in progress.
I'd imagine that Muckypup will want to act as co-ordinator for the entire project, and the person who "starts" each song could act as delegated "Song Captain".

At the end of the whole thing, we could even pool our money together to get some cds/vinyls printed up

just an idea, Mucky, whats your opinion?

:)

So here's my take:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/954292/Lurking%20Below%20These%20Putrid%20Grounds%20%28Bass%29.mp3
also 24 bits 44.1 Khz
Tempo is 97 if anyone will do something with it.

On playback I notice some wierd noises, and even the track fucking up in some points, anybody have any idea what this could be? Can't be clipping of any sorts, the track is terribly low actually.

I might have to re-do this improv because of those issues, but I'll still put it up for opinions. Riffs? sturcture? tone? any thoughts? ideas?

Sounds like a good idea dude. Although the Ninjam idea would be good, because I have RSI I can't just play when ever I want to, like I have to wait until it calms down a bit before I can do anything. This means I can only play once or twice a week :( So I won't be able to do the ninjam.

But yeah, I think that each song having a sort of song leader could be a good thing, it would let everyone get their own style and ideas into each song.

I would like to be the project leader with this, but we should all be deciding how we do the songs, because what might be easier for me, might suck for someone else!

I like the tone dude, very doom! And some good riffs in there as well, it could turn out pretty cool. But its very quiet, how did it get this quiet?

Cool,
so we're in agreement.

once we have the roster decided, you need to draw up the "roster" for each song, which will decide the order in which each member contributes to each song.

I've already uploaded my first contribution, if you like it then it could count as the start of "my" song,

Actually,
All members should probably get an MSN account, we'll all add each other so we can keep in contact and stay co-ordinated.

Im actually going to set up a new account now so don't add me yet.

fuck I already added you hahahaha well post your new account to add you again

Mucky, I'm having issues recording with my POD, It's new and I'm still leargning to use it. And the manual has practically no info on using it as an audio interface. I have no idea where to raise the input gain on the preamp for recording. I can't even raise the patch itslef high enough in my headphones.

If any POD Xt user knows how to help me please do!
Harry hughes told me a way but it seems the POD Xt doesn't have that function (He has a X3)

Mucky, so you have some sort of Carpian tunnel syndrome or something like that right? dude that sucks

Sort of yeah, I get burning sometimes in my wrists and arm. Its not always that bad, but at the moment after trying to record some grind songs, its been a bit worse.
