GMD Poll: Immolation's Discography Ranked

Considering that the first two Atheist albums are thrash metal, they are rather overrated in death metal circles.

Close is easily one of the most monstrous death metal albums of all time, right up there with None So Vile and Onward to Golgotha, EASILY. As consistent as Immo are, I don't really see them discussed nearly as much as other bands in the upper echelons of the death metal strata; yes, they are very popular, but I don't generally hear their name as often as I do Incantation, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, or any of those level of bands just below superstar status i.e. Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, whatever. Because of that, I can't really see a single shred of merit in saying CtaWB is overrated; the majority of praise I see directed towards them is for Dawn of Possession anyway.

Also is it "close" like "close the door" or like "close to something"?? I've always wondered. Personally, I also thought Atonement was a solid return to form for them after the shitty misstep that was Kingdom. I thought it felt weak, plastic (especially production-wise, and too much in its own template. It failed to do anything that really grabbed me, which as a HUGE Immolation fanboy, is saying something.

1. Failures for Gods
2. Close to a World Below
3. Majesty and Decay
4. Here in After
5. Dawn of Possession
6. Atonement
7. Kingdom of Conspiracy

This forum matches nothing in real life. I meant elsewhere, not just here. The opinions I see on this forum are 9 times out of 10 radically distorted from any other death metal fans I know, which is a fuckload.

They're better than every band he mentioned except Incantation (and that's a close call between the two for me.) But yeah, Immolation seem to be more revered in underground circles.

Saying that, Close to a World Below has a ridiculously high average on RYM.

Why ridiculously high? It's well deserved.

I wasn't suggesting it wasn't deserved. But albums with that high a rating aren't very common. It's the 8th highest rated death metal album on the site so clearly it's quite popular.

Also is it "close" like "close the door" or like "close to something"?? I've always wondered.

It's the latter. The former hardly makes sense.

I thought at first it was the former, referring the earth as the "world below", meaning the apocalypse, end of time, a close to humanity's presence here. Dunno, I was like 15 when I heard the album and it just rolled off my tongue like that at first and I stuck with it and invented meaning for it I guess, probably out of stubbornness. Oh well hahaha

Immo, hands down. Incantation is amazing but frankly doesn't crack my top ten, maybe not even top twenty. Immolation is second only to Cannibal Corpse in my eyes.

Favorite band of mine in general. Not the most consistent, but easily my favorite by a few lightyears.

After listening to their last few albums again, i think im gonna have to bump up Atonement and Majesty and Decay above Close to a World Below. And while yes they have been arguably more consistent(Suffo has been pretty consistent too), nothing from them tops the first two Cryptopsy or first three Suffocation albums.
