After another relisten, A Matter of Life and Death is probably the most underrated release. There's no filler on that album at all.

That's one of the better tracks though

Correct. Counting beats on a 'ONE and a TWO and a THREE a' rhythm does not constitute a proper riff.

You forgot to mention "Brighter Than a Thousand Chorus Repeats".

At least that one has a couple good parts, and isn't literally just the song title.

What do you mean? That's a perfectly fine way of keeping a beat

A metal riff should not ONLY keep a beat. If you're writing a metal song and your rhythm guitar just follows the drums, you've failed. Further, Harris overuses the fuck out of that particular rhythm, about as much as he overuses galloping.

Not up for a refresher on their discog right now, but the top 8 at least are pretty fixed for me:
  1. Iron Maiden
  2. Powerslave
  3. Killers
  4. The Number of the Beast
  5. Piece of Mind
  6. Fear of the Dark
  7. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
  8. No Prayer for the Dying

2. Powerslave
3. Iron Maiden
4. Number of the Beast
5. Killers
6. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
7. Somewhere In Time

I don't care about the rest.

FYI when you only rank the albums you like, it drops the lower ones down in the rankings significantly, because the ones at the bottom get little points. The net score is based on average, not sum.

What, you mean monotonously slathering the same melody and chorus on the listener ad nauseam for nearly 10 minutes isn't good songwriting? Steve Harris thinks he's Geddy frigging Lee and is trying to write 15 minute prog opuses. Can't possibly go wrong, am I right?

You're talking about the same guy who genuinely thinks the first albums he ever wrote with Di'Anno involved were actually bad. The guy's a genius and a hell of a bassist but he seriously needs to get his head out his ass.
