GMD Poll: Opeth’s Discography Ranked

Blackwater Park is way better than Still Life. I don’t know what the obsession is with Still Life from Opeth fans. Starts off well enough with The Moor and Godhead’s Lament (even though some of the clean vocal sections make me cringe). I actually quite like bits of Moonlapse Vertigo, even though as Old Wainds said parts of it do border on porno music. And then the last two tracks are awful. Can’t take that meatheaded pinch harmonic riff seriously in Serenity Painted Death, especially when Mikael does that comical fucking “EEEEEYYYYYYY-OOOOOO” growl. Embarrassing.

I was pondering on perhaps changing my order of Orchid and Blackwater Park because The Leper Affinity is just that good. But I was too late. Don’t think it would have changed anything anyway. The funny thing about The Leper Affinity and Opeth devotees is the convoluted lyric meanings they come up with instead of admitting it’s a song about rape. Because such “intellectual artists” as Opeth are above writing about such things or some shit.

Blackwater Park is peak-Opeth. They did everything right with it.

I like Still Life's mixing/production more though. I think its their best "chamber" sounding mix they have.

The Leper Affinity was the first Opeth song I ever heard actually and I loved it then and I still love it now. At the time I tortured my poor parents’ ears growling along to the “DEAFENING SHRIEKS PIERCED THE NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHHHHHTTTTT-UHHHHH!” section on a daily basis.

 It's more like their Wall. Still good, but not an elite album but for some reason still get hyped to no end. Harvest= worst ballad of the first 5 albums. Dirge for November and Drapery Falls basically rely on the clean sections, but the metal parts are flat. Patterns in the Ivy= filler. The other four songs absolutely slay.

Yeah thats a better retrospect. I havent listened to BWP in a long time. -shrug- i just remember it being really fucking good. It came out at the right time for the band, I think thats why its so revered, yet overrated. Right album at the right time.

Not a fan. I liked them back in the day and respect them for being a good gateway band but their songwriting is atrocious.

That I agree with. I couldn’t tell you why, but the world seemed prime for a prog death metal band at that time. Also, it had the crossover appeal with Steve Wilson doing the production.

I think that was a very unique relationship for the band. Honestly I think it helped synergize both bands (Opeth and Porcupine Tree) and that also helped open the floodgates for bands like Agalloch, Woods of Ypres, newer Katatonia, Ghost Brigade...just all these bands to become popular.

edit: fuck, i love the first 193 seconds of this song. might be the best sustained passage they ever wrote.

BWP was the introduction to Opeth for many, but it's a shit sandwich album. MAYH is by far their most consistent and features some of their very best tracks. Kudos to Lindgren for writing the best Opeth riff ever on Demon of the Fall.

Still Life was my introduction to Opeth.

Followed shortly by MAYH & BWP.

my favourite thing about 'demon of the fall' is that psychotic acoustic break right after the chorus. probably my favourite opeth song nowadays, in album context anyway. i get why 'the moor' is probably the most iconic though.

Omitting Watershed, I would only change:

Demon of the Fall from MAYH
To Rid the Disease from Damnation

If I had to choose a song from Heritage it would be "Famine".

That flute solo is pretty bad-ass.

Deliverance makes it in at 6th eh.
Sorry but lol. Just lol. That someone would have it at 2 or 3, why not. But there are 5 Opeth albums better than Deliverance are there, wow, what a fkng band.
