Question for Toneport UX2 users. (I know theres a few users here)

Should I buy the metalshop pack? Is it worth it for just the 5150/Powerball models? Can you use impulses with Gearbox?

I'm using Amplitube Metal atm and the high gain sounds are really good with some good impulses, the only that's annoying me slightly is it has this slight 'wah' sound to it from using the tubescreamer that I can't seem to get rid of. And without it it doesn't sound as tight.

Has anyone here had success with Peavey Revalver MKIII? I've heard all this amazing shit, so I downloaded the demo and no matter what I try everything sounds weak and muddy. It's a shame because some clips I've heard are the best modeling tone I've ever heard.

Also while I'm at it, I'm trying to figure out how to set up my proper 5150 to the Toneport and use impulses. But no matter what I try I'm getting no sound? I used the pre-amp out on the 5150 and plugged it into 'Line Input 1', and I also used the effects loop but still no sound. I also plugged my guitar into the instrument port on the Toneport and into the amp also but still no sound. What am I doing wrong?

A year ago I would have said yes, but now I will say no. You can get some amp sim plug-ins to use in conjunction with impulses that sound way better than most stuff out there for 100% Free

They are freeware plugins that these two guys made and they sound better than most amp modeling companies out there

You would set your UX2 mixer to send your Dry Input signal to your DAW so it would record the clean DI track of your guitar and then apply one of these amp sims plus a plug-in for impulses after it.

If you don't want to mess around with all these plug-ins, I can say that I do like some of the metalshop models but I feel only a few are good out of the bunch you pay for.

You can use Impulses with gear box, you would disable the cab modeling in gearbox and just record the pre-amp model without a cab. Unfortunately Gearbox is not like Revalver where you can load your own impulses directly in it, you need to do that with a plugin in your DAW.

As far as your 5150, Try using the FX send instead into the UX2's line input.
Remember to still have your 5150 connected to a cab or you could blow your transformer

Yeah, I have the cab plugged in >.>

I'll try the FX send later on but I'm sure I tried that with no success. So regarding my guitar, do you plug that into the toneport, or the actual amp? I tried both but no sound.

I'm still new to all this recording stuff, maybe I'm setting the tracks up wrong? (I'm using Reaper) I know about sending the signals to the other tracks because I did figure out how to use impulses with amplitube. But with the 5150, is it as simple as loading up your DAW, making a new track and arming it then I should have a preamp only sound until you add an impulse? Should the sound both be coming from the computer and the the cabinet when your playing? I'm not sure what are the steps to actually getting the 5150 to sound on the computer.

And how would this work if I wanted to try to use my Lee Jackson preamp with an impulse, can you just hook up the preamp only? Or is it a bad idea to do that without hooking it up to a poweramp/cabinet

I'm downloading those plugins, but I hate recording stuff with just a clean sound only, it fucks me up lol. Do you think those plugins sound better than revalver?

Thanks for the reply mang.

Eh I did a little clip with Amplitube 2 with a fredman impulse I got somewhere. The intro for Pursuit of Vikings.

Though it's clipping a bit and it's a little low endy... not sure why whenever I render something it renders it too high and starts clipping.

Edit: I think I fixed it up a little bit, put a new link in there.

Hey, do any of you guys know how to do a Dive Bomb/ Natural Harmonic?? Like what Alexi does at the beginning of Needled 24/7 :D

I've searched it up and found some videos but they arent really helpful and im hoping that you guys may be able to explain it to me.

Thanks :)

ehh its kinda hard to explain in words.

You strum the G string with your finger, then immediately lower the whammy bar. Then you hit any harmonics on the fretboard, while the string is still vibrating and pull up the whammy bar.
You can do this on other strings but the G string is the easiest in my opinion.

Maybe you should look up some Dimebag videos on youube.
There are a couple good ones where he explains how to do them clearly.
They're not that hard to master.

The first one looks like an exact copy of Exodus' Gary Holt's guitar, only that his guitar is red.

Thanks Steve!! I read your instructions/steps on how to do it and I did it on the first shot :D It sounds great btw ;D

Are you using gear box or pod farm? If you download podfarm you can monitor your playing with the amp models in podfarm but still just send your clean DI to your recording software

For the 5150 with impulses it should be like this

Guitar > 5150> FXloop>UX2's line input

You need to make sure you select the line input as the active source in gearbox.

Click on my Youtube link and check out my covers for Rebel Yell and Living DEad Beat. Both are made with Revalver MKIII and I think the sound is fucking awesome in both (I used 2 different settings for both though)

nvm... my latency is very late =(

Use ASIO as your driver, not wave-in or anything like that. You should get almost no latency.

Revavler is as good as it gets for amp modeling. I've heard some really good recordings using Revalver and impulses, but they were also tweaked to hell.
