Guitar Player's Thread

^seriously dude, we should publish those emails we've been writing. these n00bs can learn a lot from them.

I may be interested in that, although I sense I can freak out and shit in my pants. But if you've written something basic or you have some page that is helpful I'd sure be intersted. It's one of my huge lacks. And yes, I've tried working with those two diagrams you posted some time ago, but I don't really know how to work with them :(

Insomnium, sort of

EDIT: Also, Naildown and Omnium Gatherum.

EDIT2: And I forgot Tracedawn.

You might also like Disarmonia Mundi, Diablo, Amorphis, Evergrey, and Dimension Zero.

Diablo are fucking awesome :kickass:

and hatebreed.

¿?

I just discovered All Shall Perish has some amazing guitar work. The guy is too fast for his own good though, Saw some videos where he looks stoned like fuck and plays some stuff RUSTY COOLEY SPEED. Mind you, I hate Rusty Cooley but yeah, he is pretty much at his technique level.

Just love the leads in that song. Some stuff get TOO fast for me though, seriously. This is nothing I would ever want to put my time on practicing either. I just want to be good songwriter and riffer and a decent lead player.

I'd have to agree. I've become very picky with the music I listen to these days. Partly because when I work on composing, I want my source of influence to be drawn from only the songwriters who in my eyes are the best(Symphony X, Sinergy, Galneryus, Koji Kondo, Nightwish, Wintersun, Rhapsody, and various film score/classical composers such as the group X-Ray Dog or Vivaldi/Beethoven). I feel as if the more I listen to a band/composer that is merely ''alright,'' and not godlike, the more the potential of my composing ability sinks down, and I hate that; every time I listen to music I am mentally analyzing chord structures, phrasing, time sigs, key changes, etc and it makes an impact on me in some way or another.

At least look into it more before verbally degrading it

I'm not degrading it really, I'm just giving my opinion. I would love to take the time to sit around and learn theory, I'm just so busy 88% of the time that when I do finally get my guitar all I want to do is skip along to the fun stuff

anyone know what settings alexi laiho uses on his amp?
drive/gain?
treble?
mid?
bass?
reverb?
Ive heard his guitar in one of those private lessons and it sounds bloody magnificent! At the moment, my amp doesnt sound that great so I tried playing around with it but I got no where D:

Please tell mee!!

You won't get Alexi's tone if you don't have a similar amp. Also you won't be able to get a COMPLETELY identical tone, because lots of tone is in the playing.

But he uses lots of mids and a good deal of highs. Low bass and low/mid amount of gain/drive.

I just discovered one of the best bands in the world... All That Remains :D

Damn there song "The Air That I Breahte" is fucking good.

Nearly as good as Children of Bodom... Nearly.

And I searched up Opeth but im afraid I havent got the balls to listen to that sorta genre. His voice is way too deep, I sorta prefer high pitch screaming lol.

Well you kind of were degrading it and those who study it, by saying you've ''already learned'' theory by playing guitar and naturally picking up on it, when there are countless numbers of people who study and analyze music theory all day for many years of their lives. I realize it was not your intent to do so though, I think you simply misunderstand just how much one can learn from theory really, far beyond memorizing scale names. Btw I'm not trying to flame here or anything, just trying to make clear the value of music theory. Then again I also do realize that not everyone has the same musical goals or motivation.

I know you're not trying to be a dick or anything :)

I'm sure someone that knows theory is way better at guitar than me, that is obvious by the half of you here lol.
All I mean is I get by fine =P

Don't take offense to what I said, I'm just saying I get by fine without all of that.

You don't need theory to have fun while playing guitar.

Tho it helps massively when composing, especially when writing it down, in for example guitar pro.
