Guitar Player's Thread

You can get pickups for probably almost half the price used, on ebay. (pickups dont really wear out that easily if they aren't suuuper old, so your essentially getting the same product as it is new)

Look online, do some research and find out what pickup MIGHT fit you.

You can NOT beat Dimarzio's warranty (this would only apply buying NEW pickups)

I quote from their website

I installed one of your pickups and it's not really what I expected. I think I should have selected a different model. What can I do now?

If you are a U.S. resident and you are not satisfied with the performance of your DiMarzio® pickup for any reason, DiMarzio®, Inc. will exchange it within thirty days of original purchase for any other DiMarzio® pickup having an equal or lesser manufacturer's suggested retail price. If you want to exchange it for a higher priced pickup, you must include the difference in the listed retail price with your exchange.

what about that new alexi pick up? anyone have sound tests of that? I remember some kid saying he'd post videos of it in the Gear Thread, but he never did.

That's awesome.

Which Dimarzios do you really like? I'm looking for a good place to start, and they have a ton of options.

I have the Tone Zone, and the PAF Pro.

The tone zone is in the bridge of my strat I built and sounds amazing, but its a little too bassy for like fast technical metal. The Paf Pro is in the neck of my jackson and sounds great, but since I have the MM04 booster in my jackson it changes the tone a bit in a bad way (it doesn't need a mid boost IMO), I would love to try it unboosted in the bridge.

I really want to try the Evolution for the bridge, I think it would fit my needs perfectly. My other guitarist has an extra pair but they arent F-Spaced so I dont know If I want to buy them off of him.

Love telecasters!

Heres some telecaster porn

No one beats PG, but yeah, he could be a good teacher :)

This man speaks wisdom.

You could try Evolution, or maybe you could go for the new Petrucci pickups. Bridge one is the Crunch Lab, and dunno you, but I really like his tone on the new album. ANTR is a bit too dark, but it's the whole song. Guitars in e.g. AROP are sharp and clean and really nice imho. Or you could go Chuck Schuldiner and get teh X2N.

Cool stuff, i'm thinking about buying that one myself actually

I already have a telecaster with singlecoils, its nice, i have it set up with 11-50 flatwound chromes  Smooooth sound

damn this one goes around 800$ here in Latvia, and that's directly from rock-disturbation.com (official schecter disturbators in LV). Maybe i should just order it local music shop, they maybe will drop the price to 700 $ :D Just love that shop, all schetcers there have 15 % discount.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the Tone Zone, so I might have to try that out. Same with the PAF Pro.

The only bad things I've really heard about the Evolution is that they don't really have a great low end, clean up as well or show off dynamics that much. Which is why Vai supposedly made the Evo 2's, but they're both supposed to be great, in slightly different ways.

And I'm really interested in those new Petrucci pickups. From what I've read up on them, they're modeled after his old combo of the D-Activator in the bridge and Air Norton in the neck. The main differences being that the Crunch Lab is like the D-Activator, but more output, and with a smoother treble and more open bass and mids. As for the Liquifire, it's supposed to retain the high clarity of the Air Norton, but with an even more distinct midrange, and lots of response to dynamics. It's apparently like a mix between the Air Norton and PAF Pro.

Another real important thing about those new pickups that I found out is, when you are playing in the middle position, the pickups are split into what is an awesome single-coil sound.

This blog was super helpful, and I got a lot of info from it

Delanoir- I bought the dimarzio X2N and it is supposed to be the highest output passive pickup there is. I have heard great reviews and I'll let you know if it is good once I install it (which should be this weekend).

Ohhh... and I too yearn for a fender telecaster lol. That tele of Devin Townsend's posted a few pages back looks like a beast. I wouldn't mind having that 7 stringer either, haha

@Jose - Glad I could help :)

@Alt - Thanks dude, I appreciate it, and am very interested.

A good Tele is pretty sweet, I really like Devin's too.

I'm getting a Shecter C-7 on Christmas, and depending on how similar the EMGs it has sound to my 81 on the RR I may swap them out. If I do it's gonna be the Petrucci ones. I thought his tone would be mostly amp (and it does do a great deal), but the basic thing I love from it was too in the vid from that tester guy, so if I'm to change pickups I already know what my choice is gonna be :) Are they active or passive btw? My bad if it's easy to find, but I haven't come across that info.
