Thanks alot man!

The Evo 2 sounds pretty neat! JB also sounded awesome, and had great clean tones.

Tho you can't judge anything when it's not a really good mic recording or direct line in recording. At least I feel that way.

I'm gonna look up more vids on the Evo and JB. And yes, i'd like a passive, as I think I am a passive man

No problem, glad I could help. And I would agree with not being able to tell unless it's well mic'd or direct-in recorded. Also, the EMG X's seem cool, and I'm sure they sound good if not better than the old ones, but they're still going to be EMGs when it comes down to it, they are what they are. Which either you like or you don't, as with anything.

Yeah and it all comes down to this:

You won't be able to 100% judge it before you have put it in YOUR guitar and played it through YOUR amp.

I've seen some vids about the EMG X's. The guitar world one, I thought the tone was horrid, and also this Kerry King lookalike, sounded like crap. Could very well be the recording, or lack or common sense *cough* mids *cough* tho.

But as I said i'd like a passive pickup, as I don't fancy the .. unnatural tone created by actives. Whenever I plug in my Stars I always want to go to the JS30RR instead, simply because it has better sounding pickups. It's like the blackout overdrives the signal before it's processed by Gearbox :zombie:

That's exactly what it (and all other actives) do. They run the signal through a preamp before it reaches your amp, and that preamp boosts the signal 20b, which creates that effect. It's meant to be push the tubes in an amp so that the tone breaks up earlier (rather than at an even higher amp volume)

Well seeing as actives are mostly used for tube amps, actives are not for me. Since I only use a USB modelling software thingy.

Fuck this, i'll just install my EMG-HZ3 untill I get a new pickup.

Thanks for the info tho, now I know moar!

True it is that I'm really into last DT albums, but I think the new Petrucci pickups sound neat. Crunch lab is the on he has on the bridge, check out Systematic Chaos (he used old, regular Dimarzio models) and Black Clouds And Silver Linings and the tone change is nice, and he gets really defined, clear tones. Heavy and crunchy when needed, nice and clean when serves the song. IIRC Delanoir posted in the GP thread a test of those pickups by another dude and it showed that although Petrucci has better amps and stuff and that helps, the basic sound of the pickup stays and is really good. And afaik it's passive.

Well, Still just a thing to think about, José. Don't decide according to the albums...they are so insanely produced anyway that the pickup isn't really "forwarded" that much.
