You're right about pressing down on the 2nd fret, but when you tap 12 frets above, it's actually more of a flick (and it's on the actual fret, not the space between).

yeah and you just lightly tap the string in places to create the harmonic, not actually hitting down on the fret though

right, because pressing down the fret that you're tapping would actually give you 2 notes an octave apart...ok I get it now. thanks guys!

Depends on personal preference to be honest.

In terms of tone Basswood is in between the brightness of Alder and the Deepness of Mahogany, some people might prefer it to both Alder and mahogany simply because its the middle point.
