Guitar Player's Thread

@Michael: I had the same problem and purchased Alaska Picks: http://www.alaskapik.com/
My father likes and plays them a lot, but I can't get into them.

Another thing my father used to play are Kelly Picks:

But I can't get into them aswell.

What you could do is using artificial fingernails for women and file them down:

:D
I heard that Antoine Dufour does that.

I came to the point where I keep my nails short and only use a dunlop thumb pick:

Afaik, Tommy Emmanuel plays that way too:

But I definitely have to say: Playing without nails sounds great on my steelstring but not really on my classical nylon string. So I guess I'll have to get used to the artificial nails.

Question: When I let my nails grow out they provide pretty nice little picks for fingerpicking purposes on an acoustic guitar, but that also impedes my ability to properly hold my plectrum and tap comfortably (without the nail hitting the fretboard) on an electric guitar. I've tried attachable fingerpicks on my fingers, but they simply do not have the same feel as real nails. The flesh of my fingers seems to get caught on strings when trying to pick with them, so I've come asking for advice. Can one get used to playing without nails and get reasonably good? I'm not aspiring to be Paco de Lucia here but it seems to be twice as hard to fingerpick without nails.

i play classical and electric.

if you can't hold a pick, then you're holding your pick wrong in the first place, change your technique.

with regards to tapping: it's a bitch. i shave off the "off" edge of my nail a little bit, and i tap a bit flatter, and on the side of the finger. it seems to work just fine, as long as you're not doing 8 finger tapping.

however, there is pretty much no way you're going to get good tone and maximize your technical prowess without the nails. sure, you could make it sound good, but you would be impeding your technique, and vice versa.

Bit of a shot in the dark, but has anybody got any more info/pics on Paul's pgm off the GOOMY dvd, that he uses for the radiator demo? (Looks kinda like a PGM301 with 3 gold humbuckers and mirror shark tooth inlays.)

No one really knows, since it was a custom guitar used only on the goomy dvd (and obviously to pose with). The guys at the racer x forum suggests that it was PAF classics, and is similar to the PGM200 (3 humbuckers, rosewood fingerboard, sharkfins etc).

That said, do you have any info on Necro? :D

Ah cool thanks. And nope sadly no more news than of that on the website :( Although they have released some new clothing including a FOD shirt :D but you probs already know about that. I really fuckin' wish they'd get their forum up and runnin' already!

Whilst conversation is a bit shit, to get it moving, what's everyone learning atm?

I've never learnt a whole song, but i'd want to, i just get bored while i do it. I just improvise stuff, practice phrasing and picking.

im currently learning the entire Focus album by Cynic. I am done with veil of maya and halfway through celestial voyage. It's the most challenging thing ive ever tried to learn, Masvidal is not of this earth.

I don't think Metallica is touring with The Faceless, Lamb Of God, and The Sword. I think I'll go, maybe even ask this chick I like (who is a cute metalhead) to go with me, even though I probably won't (I'm too shy). I'll probably just end up going with a few friends...
