He's really quite yellow, isn't he? (my tale of Heathen Crusade)

interesting review.
i have two legitimate questions though:
1) in most of the pics, it looks like theres maybe 12 people at this entire festival. is that accurate?
2) you guys listen to and know about a fuckton of bands. how do you do it? how do you literally find the time to listen to that many bands?
im genuinely interested in this.

there's just no way all these bands are excellent (in general, not at the fest). either that or some people have very low threshholds of what is good.
yeah, thats the basis of my theory. my personal philosophy is that i only really have time to sit and listen to the upper echelon of bands. it's simply not possible that every one of these bands with unpronounceable names is "great".
but ill wait till i hear something from the horse's mouth. mark? zod? where you dudes at?

the upper echelon is bigger than you guys think... and i CONSTANTLY listen to music, i mean almost all the time when i'm awake i have some heavy metal music playing, with my 6000+ song playlist set to random generally, so it adds up...

however i think markgugs listens to a LOT of generic crap, especially as far as black metal goes, but hey if he likes it, good for him

1) you either really didn't look at the pics, or are you just trolling? Do you want a serious answer, or should I just let you troll?

2) I check out a ton of bands, and sometimes that costs me $8-$10 to do so. I listen (actively) to about 1/3 of the bands I own releases by, it's ever-morphing. Not to mention I've been listening to metal for 20+ years now.

yeah, i'd be hard pressed to tell you the song names on any discs i purchased say, after 2000.

The way I look at things, there are several top-tier bands in ever style, but why the fuck should I limit myself to only listening to a few bands? IMO, you never know when you'll stumble across the "next great thing." Part of what draws me to music and makes me love it is the constant discovery of new artists, new sounds, etc.

I've never once said "every band I listen to/purchase is excellent," or that many of them are original. That doesn't bother me.

haha, i guess the use of the words "legitimate" and "genuine" dont mean anything? ;)
so, id really like more personal info. if i may be free to ask. like, do you guys have jobs? families? why is listening to relatively obscure music so high up on your priority list? i'm 100% serious and dont mean to offend.

and a key difference is that Dorian and I are both fathers now, and married (I think or are you just shacked up) so obviously life has intruded somewhat on our time to just sit around and listen to 20 CDs a day [/sellout]
yeah, seconded. lindsey is at a drs appt and i have the baby who is sleeping. so listening to music is OUT. basically all i can do right now is conduct sociological experiements on RC.

interesting.

There were ballpark 700 people at the fest. Venue capacity of ballpark 1100. Not bad at all for A) a 1st-time event that B) required most people to fly to Minnesota in January.

Of course I have a job (though admittedly it's been quite slow for January), but I work out of my house. I'm not on the phone 24/7, so I have tons of time to listen to music. I also live alone, so really, I do what I want, when I want.

When I lived with my girlfriend, I was able to listen to about 75% less music than I can/do right now.

Finally, it's not the "obscure" part that attracts me; in fact, when I find an obscure band that I love, I want to turn as many people onto that band as possible.

Now imagine if you had a portable MP3 player, you could strap it to your belt/stick it in your pocket and put headphones in at a reasonable volume while watching the kid.
