How about a friendly guitar tone competition?

Fuck. I just submitted mine today and didn't see that last part. I put dither on the master fader and mixed it down to 16bit 44.1kHz wav files.

I don't remember if I fallowed your -6 and -13 rms levels or not, I just set the levels where I thought they would go well together and let them be.

I just downloaded them. No worries, I can fix the .wav and rms. Not sure what dither does...

Does anyone noticed any phase problem on the DI's? they sound weird to me...and the Right one is also delayed a little

They sound fine to me, but what do I know. I'm recording my own guitar and amp for this :Smug:

Is this a problem I need to fix though?

I actually noticed some wierd phase issues as well, but it was only because I tried to quad track this (and kind of did).

I tracked them both L and R through a Recto and a 5150.

The 5150 tracks were completely out of phase with the Recto tracks, but it wasn't really an issue when I flipped the polarity of the 5150 tracks. I think the stereo image would have been wider if I had 4 DI tracks instead of 2.

That said I think it will still be fine.

I think that's an issue of the amps rather than the DI's ;) And besides, how can phase matter if you have one panned hard-L and one panned hard-R?

Question: will you use these tracks or it's only a competition? Because if you will use them, we upload wave files...otherwise we can upload mp3 files

Mark already answered:

Regarding the format:

24bit 44khz wav is preferred.

I'd appreciate it if you'd follow these guidelines, would save me the trouble of matching the volumes later. If you already submitted your work, don't worry I'll make the adjustments for you.

@XeS +1
THe right guitar is indeed delayed a bit, there's some silence in front of the right guitar track. I just deleted it so left and right are as good as equal in timing.

The delay issue is likely my fault...I trimmed the silence off the beginning of Metaltastic's DI's so they would line up with the beginning of the drum track. I may have trimmed one a hair more than the other. Apologies!

Should be easy enough to fix, though.

Ah ok, cuz I know they were fine on my end when I exported and uploaded 'em! (just trying to preserve my rep :D)

I'd like to keep my options open, I can always convert the .wav files to mp3 later anyway. I might offer up the best tracks in .wav form for others to use as reference. The goal of this competition is so we can all learn from each others (who cares about eternal glory anyway).

Shame on you

No worries, like you said it is easy enough to fix. I didn't even notice. I can upload the original non-trimmed files tomorrow though, just in case.

You mean, whats left of your rep.

Thanks! Yeah, it's deceptively hard to keep it clean and mute all those ringing notes without all sorts of annoying noises; definitely took me a few tries (and some skillful editing :D) to get those DI's done!

The sample is a bit short and I miss some palm mutes or a tighter playing, but anyway it's ok.

Some questions.
- The tracks will be NOT MIXED at all? No FX applied or extra compression? And EQ?
- Tracks must be 24Bits, 44.1 Khz in stereo tracks (both left and right in the same file I suppose
- Both tracks normlized at -13db RMS?
- What is the prize for the winner? A cruise all over the world? A Mesa head? Any guitar?

- You can do anything you want to the guitar tracks, but the drums and bass have to remain intact. All you may do to those is adjust the volume so they match the guitars.
- yeah that would be nice
- Yes, about -13db RMS. I can imagine it might be a tad lower or higher, depending on how you EQ the guitars.
- Eternal glory, you can put in your sig you won the competition, and we are working on world domination. I'll keep you posted on that.
