How far does your taste branch out within the realms of metal?

Not much, but I can see that changing slightly.

I don't count modern power metal (like Bosomtasia, Fairysomething and Dragonsomething) as trv metals so, as I like it from time to time, I suppose that counts as sneaking out of the metal castle and having sex with the gypsies. Stoner doom is acceptable but I practically never listen to it.

I can however, foresee, that some time in the future I might get bored of meat and potatoes 80s style metal songs, and listen to more and more weird stuff.

Oh and yeah and I already dig some folk metal.

It depends on my mood.If I want to hear fun music then Power,Thrash and Traditional metal. If I want to hear great feeling music then Black and Doom.If I want to listening great growls than Death metal. The only styles I don't listen to is the girl gothic bands and the grindcore stuff.Im kinda like some of the people on here.

I like most Metal genres. But i'll say, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Metalcore, Black mteal, ambient, melodic death metal, death metal, these are my favourites, but imdon't like sludge, slam or any of that kind.

Anyway, I enjoy at least something from every style of metal, new and old, classic and modern, "good" and "bad". I listen to whatever the hell I want, and listen to it whenever I want. Sometimes I'll be in a black metal mood, sometimes in a power metal mood (the early incarnations or the modern Euro-flower stuff), sometimes in a classic thrash mood or in a modern "futuristic"/groove/etc. metal mood. I realize my taste could be considered unfocused or whatever but don't really care.

Could not have said it better myself...I mean I like most genres of metal, Some alot more than others, and some That I don't care too much about, but I mean hey I listen to what I listen too. Metal for fucking life :kickass:

"The realms of metal" are not sacred to me. I relish their corruption, their defilement, their bastardisation... as long as it's done in an interesting way. I prefer to view metal as one color in the spectrum rather than the very filter through which all colors are to be viewed. Music is always evolving, after all.

That said, I think there is value in recognising the hybrid genres of "metal" that take certain characteristics of metal and meld them into something of comparable power but a much different "vibe". I'm thinking of Rammstein and Ministry at the moment, who I consider to be of great value to a metalhead but who also illustrate very well that there is much to be gained by setting foot just outside the "realms of metal" so to speak.

I came into this thread thinking it was going to be about bands people listen to that aren't metal, but I clearly misinterpreted the title.

The only metal I really won't listen to unless I want to annoy people is brutal death / grindcore etc. To me it's just noise absent of all melody and not worth my time.

I prefer folk metal (Skyclad is one of my favorite bands), as well as melodic death, but save for the aforementioned styles I'll listen to almost anything.

The whole concept of "real metal" is fucking stupid. Slipknot is metal, they're just an oft maligned subgenre that many people hate. I happen to like them because they make some pretty good music.

Beyond metal I love indie folk, and anything with more...esoteric instruments is usually given preference.

My taste spans most of the main metal genres. I even like a little 90's hardcore. I favor Thrash and Progish Death Metal. I avoid the following sub-genres almost entirely:

Euro power metal
Folk subgenres
Viking sungenres
Metalcore
Porn/Gore

I would say this is the closest to my personal taste range. My range isn't as wide as V5s (no porn/gore thx) but I can jump from listening to Wormed to listening to some alternative or anything in between so I would say I have pretty wide tastes.

I've got a handfull of bands that I listen to quite a bit.
As far as genres go I'd say I'm pretty much confined to extreme metal.
I avoid some genres such as power metal or traditional stuff, but it isn't like I would refuse to check out a band that someone suggests simply because it is in a genre that I don't enjoy.

I listen to practically every kind of metal apart from the metal that you see on the various music channels on tv (Korn, Slipknot etc) and Thrash Metal.

I will listen to any style of Metal but not a big fan of stuff with too much Rock, Pop or Hardcore Punk elements, genres I don't listen to at all.

I don't listen to alot of Grind, Sludge, Drone, Metalcore, Nu Metal and Prog Metal bands.

I'm open to pretty much any form of metal, from early traditional stuff to power, thrash, death, black, etc. The only one I can't seem to get into is really brutal/extreme death metal, but that's not to say I won't give a band of that type a chance still.

Great thing about metal as a whole is there's something to suit virtually any mood/feeling.
