Easily 90s. I mean, fucking easily.

That was when death metal was refined, when black metal was tearing shit up, and even on the fucking "mainstream" side of things when Deftones and System of a Down were hitting #1 on TRL. It didn't matter if you were underground or pop-radio, metal was king.

I would say though, the whole brutal/slam genre is getting really good these days IMO, especially the production. 90's is king though, as SGD said, that's where metal really fucking started getting awesome, you had black metal as a whole starting to get into form, death metal branching out and getting heavier, prog metal also got popular with bands like Dream Theater and even though I don't like it, nu metal, metalcore etc started.

Yeah, I mean I think to a very real extent metal's improving as the years go by but the 90s were just when ALL those monolithic albums landed. Pick a genre!

Death: Deicide, Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Incantation, Immolation, Death.

Black: Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum, Beherit, Bathory, Emperor.

Thrash/groove: Megadeth (Rust in Peace), Slayer (Seasons), Pantera, Machine Head.

Grindcore: Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Carcass, more I can't remember.

Sludge/stoner: Sleep, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Acid Bath, Buzzoven, Electric Wizard.

Nu (and fuck you, everyone loved this shit when it first landed): Korn, Slipknot, Deftones, System of a Down, Static-X.

Bands were either debuting with albums that changed the landscape forever or released the albums they'd best be remembered by. I mean, I'm constantly finding new shit these days that I listen to more than the above, but the 90s were when metal AS WE KNOW IT became solidified and mastered.

EDIT: can't forget bands like Neurosis, Melvins, the whole grunge movement, Godflesh at their peak, Type O Negative, the days when Marilyn Manson was terrifying soccer moms...

Last option is retarded. Actually the whole poll is retarded.

90s /thread

Thrash: 80's
Progressive: 90's

^ my two favorite subgenres, take your pick.

We should be able to pick our own ten years, like 1984-1994. Or these past ten years 2003-2013. It would be between those two for me. Then again, I don't really see the point of choosing a decade, I like music from any given decade. 1740-1750 for example :P

Yah I thought the same way, 5 years later Brutal Death Metal is my favorite subgenre.

Embodiment's my favourite. The groove and drumming on that song is incredible!
As much as I love my 80s thrash, Maiden and Celtic Frost I'd have to say 90s. A great era for DM (especially 90-92) and I'd still get Heathen's Victims of Deception on the thrash front, so it's all good.
Also, some cracking doom albums in the 90s from My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Solstice...
And Paradise Lost!
Good times!

84-93. The quality-release-density of the first four years of the 90's puts it on par with those last six of the 80's and I don't want to choose between the full decades (although if forced I'd have to pick the 80's).
