iPhone 4

I guess it's that I don't get why people would...care about the customization (probably because I still use the default Windows XP template :D) And what apps could people possibly want that aren't available, there are like 150,000+ :loco: And arbitrary censorship of what, exactly?

There are no transparent rules about what is allowed in the app store and what not. Apple arbitrarily decides what they think is "objectionable content" and what not.

Clearly, we know pr0n is off limits  Steve has made it clear that he hates porn.

As far as objectionable content goes, I think it is a really fine line. Something inoffensive to one person could be totally offensive to another. I think having a clear set of rules could be helpful. Not sure what they could be though because the line is so fine. I truly do believe they are doing their best. I think it would be a pretty tough job to decide on those things.

There is a prank phone call app a friend of mine showed me on his jailbroken iphone. It allows your phone number to show up as someone elses on the other persons handset. You can also change your voice (sounds like garbage though). Something like this, while funny, I don't really think has a place in the app store. If someone used this in a malicious way, it could cause a ton of trouble. Apple would probably take the blame for allowing the app to be distributed and people would be pissed at them. But people are pissed at them for not allowing that in the app-store now. It's a double edged sword.

See, if it's being "deprived" of crap like that that makes people pissed at Apple, then I just think they need to get a freakin' hobby

Yeah, it's fundamental philosophies crashing.

And there's also a lot of hypocrisy involved. There are E-Books and comics that have been removed from the app store because they contained a few f-bombs, yet you can download tons of music and videos with objectionable language straight through iTunes.

I just can't support that. And it's not just the app store, that Big Brother mentality pervades basically EVERY aspect of their mobile products. From being bound to iTunes and certain carriers, to having a non-removable battery, to the decision if I need certain technologies like flash being made by someone else.

As I said, my way or the highway.

As I look at it: These smart-phones are basically little computers. I wouldn't tolerate Microsoft deciding which programs I can install on my machine so why should I accept being heavily patronized on what to do with my little computer-phone that I pay serious money for?

It's about way more than some "deprived" little app. Why not let the users decide? The rating and information system on Android works just fine as QC.

But again... If you're happy with your iPhone, then that's just cool. But I rather take the highway.

Oh ... 1 more dig :p

Adobe Flash works on my phone :p
not a dig at all.... you're basically just calling your phone cool because it supports outdated software that is SHITE for touch-interfacing. HTML5 is where it's at and where it's going... flash is bye bye time.

READ this.... iPhone/iPod will never adopt flash, and this doc tells you why.

synopsis:

~...the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.~

i love my htc evo way more than the way that iphone looks. minus that beautiful screen. but i love my video chat on my phone, qik, and or fring(which supports skype).

You know... after reading that article about the flash issue.. and as a web programmer... I agree 100%

wow... who knew :S

Not even going to comment on the article because I think it is ridiculously onesided and biased.

HTML5 video is beginning to replace Flash video, this is good. HTML5 as a whole CANNOT REPLACE FLASH as a whole. It's not an upgrade. It can't do a lot of things Flash can do, and its a lot more fucking cumbersome to program (you have to write a separate piece of code for every single browser = 3-4x the work).

And even if HTML5 could completely replace Flash, that's not going to happen on widespread scale for at least a few years.

Yes, I have an iPod Touch, and it pisses me off that there are bunch of websites that DO NOT WORK on it [Myspace doesn't work on it, and that is a HUGE site. I can't go on MySpace to listen to a band on my Ipod Touch. Why not?]. And saying that
you're basically just calling your phone cool because it supports outdated software that is SHITE for touch-interfacing.
is just ridiculous. Flash may be shit, it may be powerhungry and prone to locking up, it may not work for touch-interfaces very well sure, but there is NO WIDESPREAD ALTERNATIVE right now, and so simply ignoring the fact that so many sites use Flash is a really really really really fucking stupid move on Apple's part. I'm trying to think of an analogy here, but I simply can't because no other company is stupid enough to do this. It's not like not supporting .flac files, because you can easily convert those.. I don't even know. Thank God for their marketing team, is all I can say.

But, apparently Apple and Adobe have been working on a Flash-for-iPhones for a couple of years now. Not exactly holding my breath after the tone of Steve's article above though.

1. That's why they have myspace mobile

2. Myspace sucks for music anyways

3. If flash doesn't work correctly (and it won't because it relies so much on mouse overs as mentioned in the press release, no mouse to move over graphics in a touch interface) what is the point? Apple, for the most part, releases rock solid software that works correctly, so I can perfectly see their point in not wanting to release half ass, battery hungry flash support.

4. These "many sites" you mention that use flash, what are they? I can't think of a single site that I visit on a regular basis that relies on flash so much I couldn't view it on my iPad/iPhone

Never heard of it, checking it out now..

2. Myspace sucks for music anyways
This is what pisses me off about Apple in general. MySpace is fine for music.. I can check out a band, see if they're going on tour, find out any new info on their MySpace.
"But MySpace sucks for music, you don't need to use MySpace, just use YouTube or iTunes! Where you need to know the name of the song first, or can only listen to 30 second samples!" Fuck that, if I want to use MySpace, a popular site, then I should be able to. You're not my mum.

Yes, its shit. But there isn't an alternative. Unless EVERY SITE that uses Flash decides to make another version of their site specifically for mobile, YOU CAN'T USE THAT SITE.
Honest to God, I don't even see the argument. Public transport is shit, I use it everyday because I don't have an alternative. My computer is really old, but I use it everyday because I don't have [ie. can't afford yet] an alternative. Flash is shit, but I use it everyday because I don't have an alternative. Oh wait, if you're on an iPod, you don't use it everyday because fuck you. Lets just get rid of my computer and public transport and everything else that's bad, fuck it lets just go back to the Stone Ages, where everything is rock solid fucking reliable.

4. These "many sites" you mention that use flash, what are they? I can't think of a single site that I visit on a regular basis that relies on flash so much I couldn't view it on my iPad/iPhone
Most of the ones I visit [probably this forum and a couple of other sites TBH] regularly have mobile alternatives or don't use Flash, but one example would be www.blizzard.com [again, really big popular company/site]. But regularly is not the issue, its the fact that when surfing the net, going thru Google or whatever, I shouldn't have to come upon a site and be told 'Oh no, you can't view this site now.. maybe check it when you get home on your PC, if you remember..'

You can't honestly expect the entire internet to work, on a phone. That's just unrealistic. If you're so mad about it why did you buy an iPod Touch in the first place?

Dunno, if they're marketing an iPad as the best possible alternative to a laptop and a phone, one that makes surfing the web the best experience yet, I'd fucking hope the entire internet WORKS, letalone is enjoyable to use.

And I'm not so much mad about my use of it, I don't use the internet on my iPod much anyway (music/videos/games mostly), I just find the position of Steve Jobs and Apple fans on this issue to be insane.

edit: just DL'd MySpace mobile.. can't view music on it = useless.

Again, I'm not mad about how I use it because I don't USE the internet much on my iPod anyway.
I am mad about the position of Steve Jobs and Apple fans on this issue, and maybe I would use the internet more if it worked a little better.

I don't get on Myspace, and I don't get on Blizzard, so I'll be perfectly content with surfing on my iPad at blazing speed. For "all those sites" that use Flash for a majority of content, you named a whopping 2. Companies that don't have mobile versions of sites need to get with the times anyways. If you're a popular site you should have a mobile version.

PS. iPad games are fucking awesome

Hate to say it guys, but no ones even attempted to answer morgans points. You still can't view some sites. What do you say? Those sites suck? He wants to view them, that's not an argument
