Is Opeth the only Death Metal band you like?

But let's not get into the genre discussion, ok? It doesn't help much. You can tag Opeth whatever you want, I usually go with "progressive death metal". Atleast it's moderately accurate.

Not the only one, but in general I don't like that many death metal bands these days anymore, Nile has always been something I like to listen - and Death - but there aren't any truly brutal death bands I'd be listening.

Opeth was the first "growling" band I got into. Though I was pretty clear on that they were not really "death metal" from the start. I tried getting into Morbid Angel after I heard Mikael say they were a big inspiration. But I failed. I've tried a few times again with different albums, but they do very little for me. I can appreciate the musicianship and certain tracks (Maze of Torment!), but mostly it just goes in one ear and out the next.

The first Death Metal band I got into was Bloodbath, first through the Breeding Death EP and the first two albums. Loved the EP, didn't like the albums too much. Then came Unblessing the Purity and my fascination was renewed. After that I got into the albums too, in a big way. I'm loving The Fathomless Mastery right now.

I also went through Mike to Katatonia's Brave Murder Day/Sounds of Decay, onto the earlier stuff and other Death/Doom bands like Disembowelment.

After hearing Cynic I got into Death's Human album and pretty much most of anything Chuck ever did. While they were a part of the early DM scene they went way progressive towards the end, while still keeping some of the DM staples.

I also found Edge of Sanity through Mike's guesting on Crimson, and now I listen to most of their catalogue (at least anything involving Swano).

Then there are some other bands I like that don't really have any connection: Appalling Spawn/Lykathea Aflame, Entombed, early In Flames (back when Fridén still had a voice) + some other prog-metal (Isis etc) and a shit-load of Black Metal.

Whoa, indulging a bit too much there, methinks. Anyway to conclude:

If you're interested in broadening your tastes, I think you would do yourself a favour by A: looking into collaborations that Mike did with other bands (Katatonia, Edge of Sanity, Ihsahn etc), because odds are they're similar enough to be to your liking. B: get last.fm and browse the crap out of it. I've found tons of metal bands through there. The recomendations are far from accurate, but they at least give you direction and you get to sample most of everything.

Are you asking if Opeth is the only death metal band we like, or if they're the only band we like that has harsh vocals? There's a big difference. In either case, the answer is, 'No, I like a lot of other bands besides.' And yes, there are tons of bands that use both harsh and clean vocals. Opeth did get me into the whole thing, though ('extreme' metal, that is).

For all you who yet havn't discovered Death Metal i strongly recommend it. There are many amazing DM bands, most of them less known then others.

I am a huge DM fan, but i am open to many kinds of music.
Here are a couple of DM bands i think all people should at least check once:

Death
Atheist
Cynic
Pestilence
Disincarnate
Gorguts
Cryptopsy
Martyr
Augury
Immolation
Suffocation
Polluted Inheritance
Defeated Sanity
Monstrosity
Decrepit Birth
Spawn Of Possession
Nile

Here are some starters, as there as tons of bands that i personally think are essential to check out if you are into metal or extreme experimental music for that matter.

As for Opeth being influenced by DM. It all depends on how you really define a genre. I personally think Opeth are Opeth, and shutting them in a category isn't going to cut it. The early stuff are more Black Metal, but Mike's growls are really powerful, and his presence in Bllodbath is by far excellent. Otherwise, i really - personally - don't sense much DM in Opeth.

Of course they are, all the other bands are satanic and stuff :yuk:

b2t: Opeth was the first band using growls I ever heard and now I barely listen to music with clean vocals only anymore.

At one point opeth was the only DM band for me, but they opened the door for me i guess you could say. now i like stuff like skinless, bloodbath, vital remains, deicide(stench of redemption), im actually more into black metal now though

For me it was the opposite, I used to listen almost exclusively to death metal, but now I I'm more into progressive rock/metal and jazz.

I think Death Metal is definitely an acquired taste. It is great that bands like Opeth can appeal to people who would not normally listen to Death Metal.

But as far as the genre goes, there are many other amazing bands..
Dark Tranquillity, Death, Massacre, Suffocation, Obituary, Bolt Thrower, Possessed, Akercocke, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath.. to name a few. :D

Hell no. I listen to lots of other death metal bands: Lately lots of Quo Vadis and Necrophagist, also Death, old Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, bit of Cannibal Corpse, etc.
