Lost my job at the beginning of March. Not Covid related but just great timing as shit went sideways like 2 weeks after I lost it. When they laid me off I was all excited and optimistic. I was going to take 2 weeks and do absolutely fuck all then start taking some courses online and looking for work.
Well, then the shutdowns happened and reality slapped me upside my fucking head. Fortunately the wife is still working so at least I have health insurance. I've had a couple interviews but nothing really came out of them. The few jobs I'm seeing are paying like $30k below what I was making before. It's fucking frustrated as I entered 2020 feeling pretty optimistic about things. I just finally getting my shit together, work was paying me very well, I was learning a lot of new shit, had some good investments and had plans to save for a house. Now all that's on the back burner and every day I feel I'm just falling more and more behind on life.
That extra $600/week in unemployment was a god damn godsend mentally. Now I'm just coasting on the standard amount which is too fucking low to be honest.
My closet group of friends fell apart due to the political bullshit that's running rampant. I still talk to them but now it's two different groups.
And tomorrow will mark 6 months of unemployment.
Speaking of housing, prices in SoCal are fucking stupid. On my bike ride this morning I rode by a house that was a 2 bed/2 bath listed at fucking $900,000. My sister-in-law and her hubby moved into a friends place for a year to save for a house - bought it before the shutdown- then she lost her job due to Covid. And she was the main breadwinner.

I vowed not to make a political post ever again somewhere around oh, November 9th of 2016, yet I've been waiting for Jerry to make a new US presidential poll for the last few months. And.............the silence is deafening.Has anyone heard from Jerry recently? Is he busy deleting all of his old posts or in hiding due to the current political/cultural climate? Boy, them old posts haven't aged well.
Has anyone heard from Justin? His gorram Chiefs won the Stupor Bowl this year, one of the last great Things to happen before the world died. Sure I wanted the 9ers to win because Rah Rah Californiah but it was still nice to see Mahomes get a ring.

I had made another Facebutt to keep in touch with a few people during the lockdown, but that was a terrible mistake. Ended up adding way more people than I planned because somehow my new, secret, low-key account was suggested to a slew of current and former coworkers.

instagram is the only "social" ""media"" thing i have and its alright ish for the most part, indeed not so full of toxic political shit etc, but i can't shake this really icky feeling whenever i use it
like you know that it's owned by facebook, you know they are mining your private messages for keywords (because i use instagram for private messaging with my friends since i refuse to use fb messenger for privacy reasons... instead i use another messaging system by the same company haha in your face big brother) and i don't even want to upload pictures of my face because you know it's feeding straight into their dystopian database of everything on everyone
besides, with whatever latest silent update they forced, it now displays like 20 times as many ads/recommendations and very little of the shit i actually care about.

I used to be very paranoic about posting my personal pics at some point, but now I guess I'm just somewhere in golden middle about it. I mean if they want to know stuff about you - they will, anyway. Iphones have our finger prints and digital face recognition (same as fb). The other day someone in France lost his transportation card and needed to make a new one, so he was ready to be photographed for it, and they said 'no worries, we have your picture attached to your name from metro security cameras'. So not only they know how you look, they also can check your whole itinerary throughout the day.

thats true but we gotta watch out for false equivalences. while all of the giant tech conglomerates are more or less evil (and it's constantly changing -- microsoft used to be the MOST evil, now they're barely in fourth or fifth place) it is important to remember that facebook's and google's sole business model is about tracking you and selling information about you to ad companies -- apple's business model is selling computers and phones with (especially lately) a particular focus on privacy and if they do much to erode that trust they are fucked
yes apple is evil in many ways but the devices are pretty secure in the sense that everything on every iphone is securely encrypted and they do not sell personal data to anyone else. you can also turn off personalized ad tracking on the os level, and safari has built in support for ad blocking (which chrome on android will never have for obvious reasons)
and you cannot stalk me because my instagram account is private and im not posting it here but any interested parties can go the other way around and post their names and maybe i'll follow 8)
True, true. I don't use the DM feature on there unless someone sends me a message first, which is rare. Hardly show my face on there either.
I've actually been looking around the web for a 4g flip phone to use after the world gets a bit more back to normal, as I'm just so exhausted with how I've been forced to use my smartphone for work. I've had to install a number of work-related apps and enable the constant barrage of notifications that comes from them. It's not enough anymore to have them on my computer. What I fear is that even after my job becomes a "normal" office job again and our classes get back to meeting normally, I'll still be expected to use all these apps as I do now. Let. Me. Disconnect.
Ish has also slowed my phone (S9) down a bunch over just a few months.

One of these groping in the dark moves with low visibilty on actual income, but gotta start somewhere and the job appeals to me. I'll give it a shot. Kinda happy about the change, plus I'll work from home most of the time, which is fine by me as the more years go by, the less I can stand office atmospheres.
Anxiety's been high as my S9 continues to croak. Not mentally ready to switch to iOS, but also not willing to shell out $700+ for another Galaxy if this is the result after 2 years.

Anyway, anyone else have that chick that youd wished you would have asked out years ago, but never did? I do. Well, I randomly messenged her after over a decade. We ended up talking for 45 minutes and I asked her to lunch. She said yep, sounds good.
