Good call. Melvins just transitioned from song to song instead of having big applause spots in between. If you weren't paying attention it almost sounded like one big nonstop performance.

Yeah, nice touch imo.

Melvins was the best show of the fest :p

I'm disappointed guys. Where are the epic stories? Where are the pics? Where are the videos of drunken airguitaring?

Can't a nigga live vicariously through this thread?

Stories are back there, pics and videos are floating around. Most of us were too busy actually DOING the shit to sit back and record it, LOL.

If it helps, here's a pic of Cody getting dropped mid-surf when they slammed another surfer into him.

I dunno man, people were diving left and right, it was insanity. And yeah, you were definitely tilted pretty good, LOL.

Thursday: went to a bar for dinner and some brews before heading to the gig

Pallbearer - sounded fine to me and i was into it
Abigail - i was quite drunk by this point. they were tight and had good energy
Bolt Thrower - tent was way too crowded for me. before they went on i had a pounding headache so i couldn't really get into it. i didn't stay for their whole set but it seemed that they played all the same songs they did in 2009

Friday:

Convulse - guitarist strap broke at the beginning of their set but they recovered and played one of the better sets of the weekend. i didn't see some people lifting a crowd surfing dick and he landed right on my neck. i'm still a bit sore today
Benediction - mediocre band but they had good energy and know how to play to a festival crowd
Evoken - solid set. John Paradiso is one of my favorite vocalists. some chick offered me $50 for my disembowelment sweatshirt and i declined
Carcass - was okay. they played a few heartwork and necroticism songs. i'm not really a fan so i left after a few songs to meet schmidt at a bar

Saturday: went to bar for lunch in the inner harbor

Anhedonist - crushed. they sounded more powerful live than on the album. up to this point they were my favorite of the fest
Loss - couldn't hear the vocalist. their music doesn't translate that well live as they don't have as many aggressive outbursts like Evoken or Anhedonist
The Obsessed - barley watched any of their set as i wanted a good spot for Aosoth
Aosoth - i was standing right next to a cooling fan toward the side of the stage and i was in a trance during their set.
Revenge - complete annihilation. incredibly tight and aggressive. this band jumped up a few notches for me after this performance
Vinterland - biggest disappointment of the fest. sound was terrible. you could not hear the guitars at all for about half their set and then some type of an adjustment was made so you could sort of recognize the last couple songs they played.
Antaeus - i was prepared for the upcoming onslaught after seeing them at Rites of Darkness in 2011. top 3 performance for the weekend

Sunday: bar for lunch. 120 Minute on tap :kickass:

Cruciamentum - i got into the fest just in time to see the start of their set. it took over a fucking hour to enter compared to the other days of just walking right in or waiting 15 minutes tops. this was my last chance to see them and they killed it just like the other 2 times i saw them. this year's lineup was really lacking in quality death metal
Midnight - didn't watch too much of their set to get a good spot for Pagan Altar. they're a really good live band
Pagan Altar - set went by too fast. was bummed they didn't play Black Mass or Armageddon
Manilla Road - excellent performance and good energy for an old band. set was CrystalLogic/OpentheGates/Mystification heavy. the fest was basically over for me after their set as i didn't give a shit about the rest of the bands playing
Ascension - sound was terrible and the band was getting frustrated. i would of left to watch Pentagram but i was too tired to bother
Venom - took a long time to take the stage. i good a good laugh as the windows startup jingle played on the speakers. band was pretty corny to me. i started to make my way toward the exit during their set and as soon as the plug was pulled i left. power-tripping security guards + drunk metal retards is a pretty bad mix so i wanted to leave before something happened

Alright, I have some time for my debrief. So I'll start with the standard template.

Most impressed with: Sleep. I already had high expectations, but this band just blew me away with their sound. This may be the loudest band I've yet heard, but their sound was crystal clear, and they played with such energy that it emanated throughout the crowd and generated what can only be described as an undulating, slow-motion mosh similar to the one from Electric Wizard's set last year. I'm excited to hear more of Sleep's new material, as the new song they played was top notch.

Favorite set: Manilla Road. Loved their sound (though a bit bass-heavy) and I rocked out, sang and screamed my heart out the whole time from the front row. Helped that Maddy and I downed like three nips of vodka just before the played. I wasn't expecting them to play "Haunted Palace" and "Hammer of the Witches" and "Road of Kings," and was pleasantly surprised.

Band that surprised me the most (good way): Antaeus. I'm always pessimistic about black metal bands playing live, since what on an album is a complex atmosphere translates to a live setting as an unintelligible wall of constant noise. Antaeus sounded much clearer than expected but still crushing as all fuck. Was so happy and lucky to get a spot in the front row and snagged a setlist to boot.

Band that surprised me the most (bad way): Pentagram. Just didn't like the snare drums. However, that's the only thing that disappointed my expectations. The guitar tone was killer and Bobby's vocals were par for the course.

Band with best sound: Sleep. See above.

Band I was most bummed to miss: Midnight, but not because I missed any of their set, but because I despite getting to the stage an hour ahead of time all the spots up front were taken. I just can't enjoy a band nearly as well if I'm fighting for my life in the second or third row with nothing to hold onto and having fat fuck crowd surfers falling on my head every ten seconds.

Now for pics:

HAIL SAGAN

Sagan as in Carl Sagan the physicist? Nice pics! That food looks really yummy.

Andy was the Sleep devotee of the group, and that band worships Carl Sagan. He thought the permanent marker job would be well-received.

Zeph doesn't look any older than the previous years I've known him.

He may mean the beard, though I had one at last year's MDF.

As good as you'd think. Their setlist is Mystification and Open the Gates heavy, but they played the best from Crystal Logic, some great new tracks, and Road of Kings from Courts of Chaos.
