But you can't reject it if you're factoring in classics and not classics. Classic doesn't always = good, great or special.

Yeah this is true, it boggles my mind why The Number of the Beast is considered to be Iron Maiden's classic album in the wider community. They've clearly done much better.

Only casual plebs tend to favor it. By observation Powerslave tends to be the most popular among more hardened metal heads. Im not a fan ofcourse just saying.

That's because Powerslave is bestest. Killers is another popular choice among more seasoned metal fans.

Would i get nailed to a burnning cross if i start a thread asking whats the big deal over Burzum? Not meaning in an i insulting way but i really dont get it.

Got for it. I'd love a Burzum thread. This board doesn't have enough band specific threads. You did say you like the song "Det som engang var", what do you like about it?

It was just epic with that riff and it was very atmospheric. The next two tracks were really dull drone to me and the last was pretty standard ambient from what i recall.

Well the first track is amazing (one of the best in the genre probably), Hell I have a friend who isn't really into metal but loves that song. These days the second track is my favourite, the way it builds up in layers is just genius songwriting and those pulsing guitar lines underneath the main rhythm. I also love how it winds down from the raging first few minutes into a more mid-pace in the middle of the track with subtle manipulations of the riff from Varg. My only criticism is that the outro is perhaps a tad too long.

Little music impacts my emotions in the way that the best Burzum does, although I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is a rare listen for me these days because it's just so emotionally draining, it's a journey that I don't want to take very often, but when I do I realise it's still one of the best metal albums ever.

Do you listen to any other atmospheric, drone, or ambient based music thats not metal?

What do you mean by "atmospheric". As far as drone I've tried a few of the more well known ones and it wasn't really my thing. Same for ambient, only heard the most well known stuff but I'm not averse to looking into it more.

By atmospheric i mean stuff heavily focused on creating atmosphere.

No way. The ending trio of "Quest For Fire," "Sun And Steel" and "To Tame A Land" is perfection, but also Powerslave is knocked down a peg in my opinion because of "Losfer Words" which really messed with the flow of the album.

"Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" is a strong argument for best just on it's own though.

Well obviously. I was hoping you'd list some bands that aren't metal that you consider to be "atmospheric" so I know where you're coming from, since it's not a genre.

You gotta be patient with me im not good with words maybe caus im an autist but im giving that song another listen right quick.

I love Losfer Words, although at parts it almost sounds like a simplified and metallized Rush outtake. All those purty guitar harmonies make it fit in just fine with the other tracks though.

So i had forgotten that the reason i have trouble with Burzum isnt so much the quality of the music but that those more drone based tracks literaly make my ears itchy and irratated. Not sure why.

Listen to this while you're revisiting Norwegian classics as it's pretty much one of the best things ever. Pay particular attention to that middle section.

Not sure what ive said about this album before but I like it its just that i cant help but think about how much i prefer Attila Csihar's vocals on Anno Domini.
