Mellow Opeth

I never said that Arsis had good vocals, I just think that Mikael has shitty vocals on top of Opeth being a shitty band.

Mikael is a pretty good vocalist. I don't know if he is a better vocalist than Opeth is a band. I think Opeth is a good, very talented band, but they are simply not my cup of tea because I am not at all into 70s style acoustic/prog rock, which accounts for about 60% of Opeth's music.

I wish more people could say things like this. I think it is absolutely rediculous that someone could call Opeth a shitty band. That's something only a teenager would say who only recently got into metal when Opeth was already "big". I'll never understand why people do that with popular bands all the time. They are in a class all their own and sound like no one, and even the bands who try to sound like Opeth simply CAN'T DO IT because songwriting like theirs is hard to do and not easy to come by. There will never be a band that sounds like the MAYH-BWP stretch of Opeth's career, because no one else is capable of it. To me, that's the indication of a remarkable band. Even if you hated them, you'd have to be fucking deaf and retarded not to hear that.

I dislike Opeth and Akerfeldt's vocals but I agree with you, they are truly unique.

You see, it's exactly this typical fanboy attitude that turns people off this band, who merely respected them in the first place. Your assertion that only a " teenager who recently got into metal" would bash opeth is ludicrous.
There are actual reasons why people don't like opeth apart from their popularity. There are many to list just as there would be for any other band.

As much as you like Opeth, you have to wake up to the realisation that there are people out there who don't. Live with it.

Isle, aren't you a second hander from the Opeth boards?

Anyway, the point wasn't that everyone should like Opeth, but that senseless bashing is ignorant. Ender is right. But I'm bored and hungry.

what they said. :) I never asked anyone to like the band, or implied a lack of intelligence for not liking the band. Furthermore, i'm not an Opeth fanboy, I've barely listened to them since Deliverance was released, and i obviously understand there are a lot of people who will not like them with valid reasons for it. My position is based more on how Opeth is now considered an "entry level" metal band, and thus must obviously not be as creative or powerful as some other bands that require some digging to get to. I've seen it many times where younger metal fans who are discovering the depths of metal simply can't contain themselves and MUST bash Opeth when they see someone not as into metal as them, or just getting into it praising the band. It's extremely annoying to watch.

Yes. I got into metal with Opeth in fact. However, like all things, my obsession with them is over. This has more with over-listening to them than anything else.

I don't think people have to like a certain band. I think people go out of their way to bash opeth in a way that in the entire spectrum of metal opeth is awful or something. That's mainly the problem, not people not liking opeth.

Out of metal it seems opeth gets the most crap & I can think of so many awful bands that are overrated. I just get the feeling people are jealous rather than not liking the band. I did not get into metal with bands like opeth. It's not normal bashing with this band compared to other artists. I think that is why people start having a problem.

If opeth is so terrible where is all this great metal everyone seems to be listening too ?. I've heard a good ammount of metal failing to be impressed a lot of the times. What are the bands people should be jizzing over.

Most of the serious Opeth bashing I see either comes from trad metal fans who have a pretty narrow spectrum or the anus desciples with their neoclassical pretentions, outside of those two rather select groups most respectable people will admit the value of at least part of Opeth's catalogue even if its just limited to one or two albums. Whether they want to be associated with the drooling legions of devout fanboys is another matter entirely.
