Mikael interview: talking about Peter leaving

yep it's totally sad... I wonder what happened that he decided to reveal it.. I'm afraid that it might be that they are not friends any longer :(

lol, friends are able to tell eachother if they are doing shit or making shit, even complete strangersare able to make personal judgments and still be at relative ease with eachother. do you think that peter is offended and sad that mike didnt get back to him about the licks tape? cuz thats wrong, mike said peter was not sad, only puzzled as to why he didnt respond.

if nobody could tell eachother that something of theirs was shit then the world would be a very horrible place filled with fake happiness and security, and everyone would have unsubstantiated egos.

i see you, i hear you. it's true that a lot of pretensions go unchallenged. I mean it's sad that Peter, who IMO is a great guitar player, was not 'good enough' for Mike. But then Mike sets high standards so we get to hear some smack-ass shite.

its not that he wasnt good enough but rather he was probably offering the wrong ideas or ideas he didnt like. personally i would like to see the other members involved more in both the songwriting and composition process. id like to see mendez and per solo more often, rather than the just the guitars

If there's one thing I hate, it's lack of communication. If someone doesn't like something or if something is wrong I'd MUCH rather them tell me than never say anything. Likely with their criticism I can fix what ever the problem is.

yeah plus if you tell them they suck they wont come back and piss you off with shitty ideas anymore, their self esteem will be too badly crushed

well he commented on why he didn't respond, because it's a sensitive subject and most people would not go tell a friend that his long awaited contribution sucks... he just avoided it, perhaps it's not the right move but atleast he is being honest about it. yet it still puzzles you?
ofcourse he got offended and sad that it wasn't good enough, why do you think he quit writing after that? But now in retrospect he can be mature about it and look at the situation with empathy and understand how mike was thinking back then.

yeah it puzzles me that people cant take criticism. what the fuck is wrong with the world

if it's something you've been doing your whole life and then getting told you're not good enough, it's that kind of thing. stop being so fucking simple minded, how old are you?

For a long time I imagined Opeth song-writing like Mike brings stuff and then the whole band comes together and records it.Now I don't know the contribution of others I am %98 percent wrong about this but it seems Peter wasn't really creative about the music. It is not a shocking thing I mean its not like " OMG HE IS PLAYING IN A BAND BUT HE IS NOT CREATIVE !!!111oneoneeleven" not everyone is born to be a good musician you can play the guitar very good but that doesn't mean you are a good musician.I am not saying this to insult Peter or make him sad or whatever that's the truth, just like playing piano doesn't make you a Beethoven, playing guitar doesn't make you a very good song writer.Otherwise everyone playing an instrument would release albums and then lol I don't know.

Composition requires musical sense and not everyone is born with it.There's no need to feel bad about it.We love you Peter and I wont forget your cold-blooded style in Lamentations DVD especially :D.

no its not you dumbass

i love running, but if i go to compete against craig mottram in the olympics, of course people are going to tell me im not fucking good enough. stop being so fucking naive

After being impressed with this interview I made a mental note to check out the other artist interviews as I only had seen the Opeth ones. Well worth it imo, there are plenty of good artists interviewed with some awesome live footage as well.

I think Mike didnt tell Peter his licks weren't up to his standards because as a lot of you may know musicians are kind of funny about others telling them what they create isnt good. I was in a band for a long time doing cover songs and why? Because we couldnt write our own songs. I dont care what anyone says and how good you are...it's hard to write a song. Is difficult to tell someone that you dont like their ideas because people can take it as a personal insult. We cant just take a peice of what everyone has done and jam it together and make a song. Sacraficing quality for feelings does not good music make.

Added later: I just finished watching the entire interview (Thanks Kazraine!) and I think it's weird that Mike doesnt recieve compliments from the others in the band? Does everyone think his ego is so big that he doesnt need them? I guess sometimes when people hear things like for instance on "Roundhouse" when he introduces himself as "the most important member" people arent aware that he may be being facetious. Lets start the official Mikael Akerfeldt compliment thread. We got your back Mike!
