NBA Playoffs

If Avery Johnson was an intelligent man, he's double Paul in the back court like he did in the game at the end of the season.

I hope they fire him.

Avery Johnson is the worst thing to happen to Dallas this year. He insists on keeping the status quo even though it doesn't work, and the strategies that they used in the regular season against Paul DID work, but no, Kidd or Terry can guard his magical ass one on one. He's a fucking retard.

The Spurs again look like the team to beat in a playoff setting. Especially given the nature of playoff officiating, which lets Bruce Bowen shut down opposing wings to a degree that he can no longer actually accomplish in the regular season, when the refs actually have whistles.

The Spurs continue to surprise me. I thought they were going out in the first round, especially when I saw that they were playing the Suns. Obviously not. That is a great series.

Everything about the way the playoffs are played in the NBA favors the Spurs though, so its not that surprising. Even with Shaq, the Suns just aren't built for playoff basketball: they just don't have the offensive efficiency in the half court to make up for their suspect defense in games that slow down for long stretches.

If they're not going to double him in the back court, they need to just stick Terry or Kidd on him and just take their chances. The problem is, he comes down and has a different strategy on him every time. He's tried doubling him in the half court, which is stupid because 2 passes and someone dunks. He tried zone, which is stupid against a great passer. He tried guarding him with Howard last game, which is stupid because Josh Howard is a steaming pyle of uninspired garbage.
Personally, I would just stick Terry on him to start the game. At least Terry has the quickness to keep him in front of him and make him shoot jump shots. I would also like to see Devean George get a little more playing time so he can lock down Stojakovic, because he's killing us almost as much as Paul is.

The good news is that he said in an interview on the Ticket that he's going to start Terry and cut Stackhouse's minutes next game.

The bottom line is, though... all New Orleans did was protect their home floor for 2 games, exactly what they were supposed to do. Dallas is 34-7 at home and New Orleans has lost 13 straight in Dallas, along with Byron Scott having never won a game in Dallas. All they have to do is protect the home floor, and we're right back where we started. So.... don't panic unless they lose tonight's game.

4 titles in 9 years, 3 all stars, 2 guys who are capable of winning MVP, a great defense, the exact style you need to play in the playoffs... What about this surprised you?

Phoenix would have a better chance if they had Marion, because they could counter the Spurs style and try to take them out of their game... instead they have 75 year old Shaquille O'Neil... and what part of his bad knees makes him able to guard Duncan?

He prevents them from being the up and down team they were, and what they got him for (guarding Duncan and other bigs) he has been completely ineffective at. They would at least be tied at 1 apiece if Duncan hadn't gone off for 40 and 15 in the first game.

Also, he's a complete and total liability in crunch time. You can't bring him in, because all you have to do is foul him. Hack-a-Shaq is alive and well, and that takes him completely out of the game. Marion could at least bother one of the big 3, and be a factor in the clutch.

They're fucking old, man. I didn't think they had the energy to be able to keep up with the Suns, but they went about it the right way, holding the Suns down to the half court.

Shaq will go down as the worst trade of the year.

Duncan is 32, Ginobili is 30, and Parker is 25.
They have a few older role players, but their main guys are all still in their primes.
Not to mention Popovich is actually a good coach and knows how to make his team impose their style.

Well, hey, at least now we're not getting swept. Terry put on a defensive show tonight. It was really surprising. It seems that he at least gives a damn whether we win or lose. I was really impressed with the way he played screens. New Orleans loves the screen, at least against Dallas, and Dallas didn't really have an answer for it... switch and Paul just blows by the bigger defender, stay on the man and Paul escapes the defender, but Terry was really impressive in staying with him after screens. He showed speed I didn't think he had.

Also, just a note for posterity, I'm pretty sure that's the first time I ever made an argument about sports that wasn't from someone else.

I hope that Celtic will beat the shit out of everybody and that Garnett eventually will achieve his firts championship in his career. Although it might be hard because Allen, Pierce and Garnett may want to fight for MVP of playoffs and it would fuck up the whole teamwork.

Uh... Jason Terry is known for his speed and quickness... hence the nickname "JET" being relevant.

The bigs did a real good job of containing him as well. When they stepped up, they did it to where he couldn't just easily drive by. The overall team defense was stellar last night.
The only problem is whether they can keep that energy in a situation not quite as desperate.

Also, kudos to Avery... for once. He decided to give Terry all of Stackhouse's minutes pretty much and replace him in the starting lineup. I liked the presence of Devean George more last night as well. He's probably our only capable consistent perimeter defender, and he provides good energy.

It's over. Mavs lost. /wrists

*chants* Fire the coach! Fire the coach!

Stackhouse and Howard decided to show up for once, although it wasn't enough. Personally, I say trade 'em.

They're really shallow right now, not much presence off the bench. I don't like that. Hopefully they fix that next year.
