nirvana

Nirvana is a tolerable pop rock band imo, they wrote some decent catchy tunes, and some garbage too...not groundbreaking or revolutionary like the stupid rock media and some turds call' em...

When I was younger I taught myself to play guitar listening to nirvana so for that they hold a special place for me. I moved on after discovering heavier and more complex stuff.

In retrospect they're not all that special, I think I prefer Grohl to Cobain in terms of songwriting and playing.

I don't have a problem with Nirvana. Very overrated, but could have been a lot worse. Still, it wasn't even like they were the best grunge band. Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam... they all SLAYED Nirvana. But I think some people are overly harsh on what was actually an alright band, just because they (quite justifiably) resent the undeserved hero worship Cobain gets these days.

IMHO.

 Oh jesus, man...FUNNIEST post ever! Nirvana was first, all other bands followed suite thereafter.

Nirvana is and will always be one of the greatest bands ever. In Utero was a freaking gem.

And yes, COBAIN IS a hero to those people who had a very hard time fitting in.

Not THAT funny tho
Heck yeah it is. All these retarded-ass teenagers think Nirvana, specifically Cobain, is the center of all awesome music. And, one of them goes so far as to say that Cobain wrote the best song ever and that it was "The Man Who Sold the World." How much mroe sad/funny can it get? What a dumbass (the girl, not you).

um, nevermore, queensryche, soundgarden, alice in chains, sir mix-a-lot???

I don't like Grunge so there's Sound Garden and Alice out of the running, Queensryche? I didn't realise any one actually listened to Queensryche, how strange...

Mix-a-lot and Nevermore are the only serious contenders.

But Champion is my preferred band.

werent you slagging enslaved? yea, just checking.

Yep, that was me. FTR I was disappointed with RUUN. I haven't heard any of their previous work & don't plan on spending any of my $$$ on them. Not to say I wouldn't listen to them if given the chance.

For someone as musically inclined as you are NFU, I'm surprised Nirvana's earlier work like Bleach or some of the earlier demo's/singles don't appeal to you.
Kurt wrote some of the best songs of my generation. Maybe I'm just able to better relate to them ???

Can't say I'm surprised that Nirvana is unpopular in this forum.

I'm a bigger fan of AIC when comparing Seattle bands. I'm shocked someone mentioned Pearl Jam as being better than Nirvana. I like PJ, but can't remember the last time they made an album that meant anything to me. vs. & ten were great. It been all downhill since

Beg to differ.

Soundgarden was first signed to Sub Pop records and released Screaming Life in 1987.

Nirvana released Bleach on Sub Pop in 1989.

Further more, Screaming Trees released their first album in 1986, Green River released their first album in 1986 as well. Nirvana was FAR from the first "grunge" band.

I do agree that Nirvana was overrated. But they weren't horrible..there were a lot of bands that were a lot better than them that didn't get the recognition Nirvana did.

Well, now, that's a rather odd argument. You're arguing that, because Nirvana predate the other grunge bands (which they DON'T, as has already been pointed out), they are automatically better? That's just... ridiculous.

Quality shouldn't be assesed by when something was made. It can only be judged on whether or not it's actually good. If you made a crappy record in 1979, it would still be crappy today. If you made a great album last week, then it'll always be great, and it'll always be better than the aforementioned crappy one.

Ok, I'm gonna stop now, I can feel that if I go on I'm gonna cease to make sense. But I didn't think my post was that funny. Just... calm and rational?

I think Pixies and Sonic Youth are earlier influences in the world of grunge too. And better bands.

Having said that, I was about 14 when Nevermind was huge and although I don't ever listen to them any more I will always like them a bit. In Utero and Unplugged are the albums I'd be most likely to play again.

who are these morons that believe "the man who sold the world" was a nirvana song? i hope that they can use the internet or maybe even a book to find the song was by david bowie, in fact kurt says it clearly after he performed it on unplugged, "that was a david bowie song." good god, those type of people leave me with little hope for the future of mankind.

This board is the answer to eveything :

"Nirvana was a pop band"

"All the other grunge bands were better"

"Demos from Cobain's ass in 1987 featured his best material"

" Mankind is lost. David Bowie wrote "The Man who Sold The World ! Even Klingons know this "

I have other ones for ya :

Butch Vig is Satan

Kurt couldn't play his guitar

The Melvins destroy Nirvana in every way

Nirvana sold out after the Bleach demos !!

Cobain rapped the Meat Puppets !!! Three times !!!

Come as you are is a Jaz Coleman rip off !!!

Personnaly, I prefer Winger from this era, they had a fantastic guitar player (Reb Beach) and an incredible fusion drummer (Rod Morgenstein)

Too bad Nirvana stopped the career of this promising band ( their third album was the best.)

She's only seventeen !!!

Didn't mean to make it sound like you are noob to music.
