Nirvana is a tolerable pop rock band imo, they wrote some decent catchy tunes, and some garbage too...not groundbreaking or revolutionary like the stupid rock media and some turds call' em...

When I was younger I taught myself to play guitar listening to nirvana so for that they hold a special place for me. I moved on after discovering heavier and more complex stuff.
In retrospect they're not all that special, I think I prefer Grohl to Cobain in terms of songwriting and playing.

For someone as musically inclined as you are NFU, I'm surprised Nirvana's earlier work like Bleach or some of the earlier demo's/singles don't appeal to you.

I'm a bigger fan of AIC when comparing Seattle bands. I'm shocked someone mentioned Pearl Jam as being better than Nirvana. I like PJ, but can't remember the last time they made an album that meant anything to me. vs. & ten were great. It been all downhill since

Soundgarden was first signed to Sub Pop records and released Screaming Life in 1987.
Nirvana released Bleach on Sub Pop in 1989.
Further more, Screaming Trees released their first album in 1986, Green River released their first album in 1986 as well. Nirvana was FAR from the first "grunge" band.
I do agree that Nirvana was overrated. But they weren't horrible..there were a lot of bands that were a lot better than them that didn't get the recognition Nirvana did.

Quality shouldn't be assesed by when something was made. It can only be judged on whether or not it's actually good. If you made a crappy record in 1979, it would still be crappy today. If you made a great album last week, then it'll always be great, and it'll always be better than the aforementioned crappy one.

I think Pixies and Sonic Youth are earlier influences in the world of grunge too. And better bands.
Having said that, I was about 14 when Nevermind was huge and although I don't ever listen to them any more I will always like them a bit. In Utero and Unplugged are the albums I'd be most likely to play again.
