Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

New hip hop release from Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler of Digable Planets. Is not only being heralded as the best hip hop album of the year but the best release period of the year so far.

I fucking LOVE Digable Planets. DL this album ...so far sounds good.

Yeah man, DLed this the other day after reading its 8 billion glowing reviews. I love the beats, they're pretty terrifyingly psychedelic at times.... I've only listened once, but shall again.

I'm also digging this John Maus dude. Very 80s throwback, with a nice WTF twist

Indeed. That beat to the first half of the 2nd track is ridiculous. What the 3rd track develops into halfway through is badass too. Another track that I dont remember the # to is amazing too. Listened to it a couple times today while driving around in a loud as fuck diesel truck so it's still coming together. Will be bumping it in the car for the next few days and see where it goes. Stellar production.

Is that the one with the crazy ass glockenspiel(?) breakdown?

Man, I really need to listen to this again after work. With some whiskey and ganja.

No, that's track 2. Kicks off with them ghostly slurred female voices then breaks down into that off-kilter glockenspiel loop which then integrates into the ghostly main theme.

An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum

Track 7 is the other one I was talking about.

One thing I love about the album is that it's under 40 minutes. For some reason SO MANY rap albums are 70+ minutes and they're impossible to sit through all the way. More rappers should take a cue from "Illmatic".... That album's pretty much perfect.

Goddamn the barry sax is the final boss of woodwinds.

This Gotham Berlin Saga stuff you posted is pretty kewl. Not something I'd listen to on a regular basis, but kewl nonetheless.

Contrabass Sax not a Baritone..thing is fucking huge.

He's definitely damn gifted. Great circular breathing and all....get him into some kind of AG/Free jazz setting and I'd be all over it but not so much this stuff. Cool, but wouldnt listen to. He reminds me of Evan Parker, or even Anthony Braxton maybe, a bit.

Anthony Braxton maybe

Please tell me he sometimes goes by Tony Braxton

From that review:

Most reviewers seem to discuss this record in terms of Stetson’s physical skill, and granted his circular breathing is something unworldly. But it’s really about scale. Specifically, it’s about amplification: Stetson placed around two dozen mics in various places inside and outside of his instrument, which makes the whole thing sound like the work of six instruments at once, only about half of which sound like actual saxophones. Mics around the mouthpiece and keys make the slightest hum through the reed sound like a jet engine and the clacking of keys sound like the stampede of horses on the cover.

Do other jazz musicians do stuff like this?

lol, he's one of the members from Tony! Toni! Tone! ;)

The mic thing? Not that I'm aware of. I guess it's a cool way of using studio effects without actually using studio effects, so to speak. Live, he'd have to do the same thing though since you would only hear the actual instrument.
