I believe it just means simple song structure, catchy melodies, and repetition of musical passages. So when somebody says a band is indie pop rock, that's what they are talking about

pop is different from "popular" music

ok, this reminds me of a story. i was recently in vegas for work (for a month. effin sweet). every time we went down to the strip we would stop and see some music. and every place we went i would request slayer. even at the piano bar at harrahs. i would yell slayer inbetween every song. gave tips for requesting raining blood... basically being a drunk asshole. well i never got my song. nowhere on the strip do they know slayer. not even at the hardrock.

well, now every time i walk by my DO's desk ( a LtCol.) he yells SLAAAAAYYYYYEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR. not to mention everyone knows the story. even those who werent on the trip. it got the point where i had to brief the squadron about slayer. needless to say that didnt do anything to calm the storm.
