What about power metal? I wouldn't call power metal vocals harsh.

Nah, they aren't. I guess the only reason is probably because.

1. Marketing
2. Exposure
3. The vocals are reminiscient of the 80's.

But, everyone I know and talk to doesn't like metal because of the vox, not because its "difficult" to listen to.. >.>

Most people actually enjoy the instrumentation alot (in my experience), but are turned off by the vox, which I'm the complete opposite (about the vox). Vox adds so much to the songs, or can take away from them all depends.

^ Give me those guys ANYTIME. They fucking own.

i think people use the vocals as a scapegoat. anyone who really puts attention to the music immediatly looks past it and goes straight to the guitars

from my experience, most people don't like metal due to the image as well as the intensity and speed of the music

in pop music/culture, image is everything and metal is perceived as music for nerds, losers, misfits, etc...

Unfortunately that is true. When the public thinks of metal heads they think of images like Beavis and Butthead, and characters from movies, like the metalheads from Little Nikkie and the characters of Airheads.

It took some practice and repeated listens to appreciate the more extreme sides of metal. It seemed like there was so much going on, I could not process it all.

its acessable. just like pop music is today. its easy on the ears and doesnt confuse someone who isnt familiar with the genre.

its just like mordern music. why do more people listen to pop than metal? because pop is easier to listen to. its bubble gum music, so to speak
~gR~

Ummmm...people don't actually "listen" to that song. Anyway, stop trying to compare The Canon to an entire genre of crap music. It is one movement of a work, which nonetheless has become a part of popular culture. And about your comment about people not liking more complex classical music, this is an unfounded comment because people have generally not heard anything really complex in terms of classical music, although yes there are much more complex pieces. Either way, it does not classify as pop music.
That would be like comparing Homer's Odyssey to a Harry Potter book, because it is a popular work of fiction

This is true to some extent, and it pisses me off. I hate how many people think that metal is loser's music and hip hop is the music of cool people. I don't care, though, because I'm not a loser, whilst I know several socially awkward geeks that can't get a chick, that like shit like 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg. Stereotypes probably actually hold true less than 50% of the time, whether stereotyping a group with a given musical preference, a race, a class of people, group with a certain hobby or interest, etc.

As if image doesn't matter in metal.

The chip on your shoulder just eclipsed the sun. Did mainstream hip hop beat up your dad or kick your dog or something?

I personally couldn't give a fuck if stupid people think whatever genre I happen to like is 'losers music'. Seriously, why care? Fuck the fucking fuckers.

Oh man you are stirring the pot so much and being so provacative I can't believe what I am reading.

im not trying to be "provacative" im just stating my honest opinion . it's not like 'pop' just means 'top 40' and there is underground pop music, regardless of how you idiots choose to interpret the term
