You're confused. One can have an opinion about something and that opinion can be wrong. I can have the opinion that the Earth is flat but obviously I would be wrong. But so what? It's quite obvious that people have varying opinions on different matters. That was not what was at issue. W&W's claim was that whether somebody is an escapist is merely a matter of opinion, or "subjective". That clearly is not the case. There is a fact of the matter about whether or not somebody is an escapist. Thus, if somebody makes the claim that some class of people are escapists, they better have some good reasons for making such a claim.

What the hell is your god damn point? I know he had an opinion on this matter. You are totally missing the point. His belief about classical music lovers was unjustified and obviously wrong. So what if it was his fucking opinion? Fuck his opinion. It's wrong, it's unjustified and it's shit. If somebody makes a claim about something they're not immune to criticism. If somebody says something ridiculous, reasonable people should be able to point that out.

I don't know. Would you rather I stopped caring whether the claims people make are true or false? That seems like a pretty ridiculous expectation.

No they're not. They're just cases in which it is clear that the behavior + psychological facts about a person obtain in such a way that the description given in the meaning of the term obviously applies to them. It is an entirely different matter whether any given level of escapism is "acceptable" or not.

Well that 'entirely different matter' must be what I'm arguing then because to me my point seems remarkably straightforward. Almost everyone engages in escapist behaviour to some degree, whether it is appropriate to use the term 'escapist' in a derogatory sense relies on a subjective judgement of how detached from reality one part of a person's personality is. So if W&W thinks furiously masturbating over classical music shows someone's musical tastes are extremely outdated and he places great significance on musical relevance then it is appropriate for him to call them an 'escapist'.

Maybe you're just arguing that listening to classical music DOES NOT IN ANY WAY demonstrate escapist tendencies so there are no grounds whatsoever for the insult. Fine. We've misunderstood one another (again) and I'm not really interested in arguing for an opinion I don't hold right now. So if that's the case I'm out.

I mean how many times have we heard "Unlike you losers I NEVER download music" or about how 'sophisticated' your tastes are because you listen to a bazillion bands that no one has ever heard of?
Whether my remark is pretentious or not it is actually a pretty common phenomenon that intelligent people who love music generally tend to like and appreciate classical music.
