Cats naturally eat grass to either help cough up hairballs, or to make themselves throw up if their stomach hurts.

So do dogs. My Jessie does it every once in a while. She's a Chinese Crested powder puff, born from a hairless mother. She was the only one born with fur and the only one to survive. All the other puppies died.

The furry ones are actually the exception. However in a single batch at least one always comes out furry(even when both parents are hairless) in order to keep the others warm.
