I am surprised that no one mentioned Lord of the Rings?? To me, one of the greatest epics ever written. The movie was good, but they cut/left out alot.

I also like alot of military and cyber thrillers.

George: I'm sure you're familiar with Reveries of a Solitary Walker, by Rousseau.
I haven´t read anything by Rousseau...

Another vote for Neil Gaiman. American Gods and Neverwhere are both fantastic. I haven't read Starfall yet, but that's another one by him and he has a new one coming out this fall, Anansi Boys, pseudo-sequel to American Gods. Also Good Omens, a collaboration between him and Terry Pratcher is great as well.

Also, Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (at least the first 3 books in the Trilogy [there are 5])

Haven't heard of Anansi Boys, so thank you, Matt. american gods is one of my favorite books ever, so I am definitely looking forward to this now

We assume that everyone in the universe has already read those books. If you haven't read them, you're not a human being. If you only read them AFTER the movies came out, you're some kinda monkey hybrid thing.

Everyone who named George R.R. Martin wins. A Song of Ice And Fire is the best fantasy series since LOTR, rivalling Tolkien in scope and magnificence and far surpassing him in characterization and plot. Read it or be forever known as lame. And check out third-party character portaits here.

Wheel of Time is weak sauce, god-awful boring.

Robert E. Howard's Conan stuff is awesome. Horribly racist and sexist, of course, but gloriously fun and shockingly well-written.

On the non-fantasy side of things, John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces is quite possibly the funniest book ever written. A brilliant mix of high and low comedy, with a legion of hysterical characters. Won a Pulitzter, FOR A REASON. Great shit.

If you are in the mood for some uber heart warming, but pretty gay generic fantasy
David Eddings:
The Belgariad and
The Maloreon

In Eddings' defense, I have to say that the Elenium has passages such as "Ulath nonchalantly toed aside the puddle of brains..." (paraphrase)
So he does have his good points.

James Patterson writes at a 6th grade level. His plots are decent but he can't write a good ending to save his life. Overrated.

Read The Rogue Warrior. Its the autobiography of Richard Marcinko, the founder of the Navy's SEAL Team 6. Great book and series.

Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNabb
first gulf war, he was a British Special Air Service sargeant who took a team covertly into Iraq but the team was discovered, some were killed, he was taken prisoner and tortured for days, but finally managed to escape.

My War Gone By I Miss it So by Anthony Loyd
about a former soldier's desire to go to Bosnia and cover the war as a photographer. powerful stuff.
