Hello. I'm in need of some recommendations.
I am searching for music to get. Any Genre except for the obvious(rap,or other crap) but i'm sure nobody listens to that. Anyway it seems you ppl know alot about different types of music(ie.from classical,jazz,70's 80's metal, to the most brutal etc.). So lets say I want to try some classical. What would be the best Artist&Album to start with. That goes the same for Metal, like good progressive metal or just metal from death and black(just as long as It is good. I have heard ppl mention bands like Anathem, Atheist, Death,(Bands like these)
And if it is not to much trouble already(heh heh )then could you possibly include titles of the albums. It would be very helpful. Thats all, Thanks

Im giving you the essential in metal that really anyone should have in their collection for each of the mentioned categories below. I think they are all excellent albums obviously.

Some Classic Death Metal:

Possessed - Seven Churches
Death - Scream Bloody Gore (Not pure death, but still essential)
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Deicide - Deicide (their 1st and their best)

Some Black Metal:

Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky (simply their best and the obvious choice for anyone wanting to listen to the truest black metal music)
Bathory - Hammerheart, Blood Fire Death (pure viking metal)
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Satanas

Some Thrash Metal:

Slayer - Reign In Blood, Hell Awaits
Sodom - Agent Orange, Persecution Mania
Kreator - Extreme Agression (their best), Terrible Certainty
Sadus - A Vision Of Misery (influenced by old sepultura, amazing thrash album)
Annihilator - Alice In Hell (A very underated band and album, it seems to be extremely influencial and i personally think its awesome)

Some Heavy Metal:

Metallica - Master, Kill em all, Ride the lightning
Pantera - Vulgar display of power
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz,Diary of a madman

Some Doom Metal:

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
St-Vitus - really the 1st doom metal band, anything from their 1st albums
Katatonia - Dance of the december souls
Cathedral - Forest Of Equilibrium
Anathema - The Crestfallen, Serenades
Candlemass - Nightfall, Ancient Dreams

Sorry about the power metal albums, i dont listen to that music!

Haggard - ...And Thou Shalt Trust The Seer
Otyg - Any album you can get hold of! :o)
Mithotyn - Gathered Around The Oaken Table

I'll leave those for you to check out for now..... :o)

Go and download 'Death - Flesh and the power it holds' (off 'The sound of Perseverance' album), and then tell me if that is 'good'.

Death Metal -

Nile - Black seeds of vengeance
Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilation
Suffocation - Despise the sun (Try 'funeral inception' first)

Progressive Metal -

Metallica - ...And justice for all
Opeth - Still Life
Nevermore - The politics of ecstasy

Progressive Death/Thrash -

Martyr - Hopeless Hopes, Warp Zone
Death - The sound of perseverance
Death - Human
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Cynic - Focus (Try 'Textures' first)

'Power' Metal

Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings
Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes...
Nevermore - Dead Heart In a Dead World

Thrash -

Megadeth - Killing is my buisiness, Peace Sells, Rust in Peace
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - Ride the Lighting

Other -

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
Cradle Of Filth - Midian
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve

Electric Wizard - "If there has ever been a more orgasmic, heinously sludgy guitar sound recorded, then I want to hear it But forgive me if I claim it must be nearly impossible to match the unbelievably thick n' soupy dirge that Electric Wizard coughs up...Doomrock fans can only benefit by looking into this world, stepping into it's mind and tripping away while the Wizard spins it's tie dyed web"- Metal Maniacs

Nick Drake - Anything: Depressing acoustic folk music backed with lush string arrangements.

Iced Earth - Again, pretty much anything. Definately one of my favorite bands as of late. My favorites are Dark Saga and Burnt Offerings, but they all rock.

Neurosis - Times of Grace, Through Silver in Blood, A Sun That Never Sets (the only ones I've heard thus far). God, how do you explain these guy's sound? Think Hardcore + Industrial + Sludge Metal + Tribal Beats. Totally bottom heavy and devistating. Steve Von Till's solo album, As the Crow Flies is also great. It's very stark, depressing acoustic music. Occasionally backed by a cello or something. Really really good.

Sepultura - Chaos A.D. Just a kick ass album

Nevermore - Politics, Dreaming Neon Black and Dead Heart in a Dead world.

The Shroud - Long Ago and Far away. Female lead goth rock. Fairly introspective. I like it.

I'd say most of those bands listed were metal..

In other genres..

Classical: well.. depends on how you like it.
There's a reason the famous composers are famous. They're fucking amazing. I suggest Bach's fugues (Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, everyone's heard that. But listen carefully).

Chopin for piano, Beethoven for grandiose symphonies. Wagner for even more grandiose symphonies and operas. Look around, almost everything is good. If you just want darker music, look for pages that recommend good roleplaying music.

Oh, and check out Carl Orff's Carmina Burana (especially the first two pieces).. always a favourite.

---

For Jazz, I recommend Chet Baker. He just kicks ass.

---

I'm gonna go chill to MAYH now.. thought I'd throw a few suggestions in at the very least.

A few random discs from my collection:

Entombed - Wolverine Blues

In the Woods - Omnio

Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity

Orff - Carmina Burana

Philemon Arthur and the Dung - Musikens Historia del 1 och 2 (=the history of music part 1 and 2)

Ved Buens Ende - Written In Waters

Also, 'Novembers Doom - The Knowing' has a bunch of interesting moments and at 5 dollaahs it was a steal.

If you are interested in jazz, you MUST check out Jere Laukkanen's Finnish Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. They have the definite scandinavian feel, and are much darker than what you usually hear from jazz. Of course, it's not metal, but it's still got that certain sound to it.....very good stuff.
