Riff Thieves

KMFDM ripped Slayer's angel of death riffs.

I don't really remember the name of the song, they have just too many albums.

if the main riff of a song is stolen, though...

Exactly; it goes back to context. Using an identical riff as some other band is not inherently bad. It's the implementation of that idea into a different framework that is important.

Oh heres a good one i think i should mention.
Morbid Angel's "hellspawn" uses both of the same exact main riffs from Bathory's "Chariots of fire." It's funny because they both sound like almost the same song. Biggest Bathory ripoff ever.

It wasn't used in any Mayhem song.

Yes it was.

The opening guitar riff to "Ye Entrancemperium" is taken from an unnamed Mayhem song. As such, Mayhem guitarist, Euronymous, is credited in the album liner notes even though he died two years before the album was written and recorded. A recording of this unfinished track can be found on the Mayhem bootleg "Ha Elm Zalag".

I agree with this, but it is of course still thievery; stealing a washing machine and stealing a candy bar are still the same crime in a nutshell.

I hear the same riffs all the time in music, there are only 12 notes and only so many patterns. The more music you hear the more you'll hear similarities with riffs, and some artists do rip others off on purpose and sometimes obviously coincidentaly.

exactly. Its only a matter of time that certain note patterns are eventually repeated, I mean shit, how many years has music been played? everyone's hit the same notes at some point.

It's pretty much prog metal law that you have to rip off the final unison leading up to the last verse in Dream Theater's "Metropolis" at some time or another.

Megadeth "Mechanix" ripped of a riff from Metallica "The Four Horsemen"
"The Four Horsemen" is an elaboration on "Mechanix", which Dave Mustaine wrote for Metallica. Metallica expanded it and rewrote the lyrics after Dave left, and Dave used his original version in Megadeth.
