Nokturnal Mortum/Meshuggah/Immortal

Meshuggah's best album possibly (but probably not) cracking the top 50 is nowhere near as as questionable as having The Mantle at #2, and I just don't see how someone can compare the two. DEI could be in for this song alone, which is one of the best metal songs ever.

ummm ... nobody compared the two albums fool. I only brought up that fact that the person who voted down Ample Destruction(a bona fide classic) while giving +2 to fucking meshuggah is one of the same people who voted The Mantle in at #2 ..... :loco:

No, The Mantle shouldn't be at #2, but Ashes is far better than anything Meshuggah did.

... nothing from them belongs in the top 100.

i wouldn't mind that Meshuggah album being on here, since it's decent, but not this high.

What the bloody fuck was that?

I think that changed my mind, maybe I will send some negative votes its way.

Eh, a lot of people don't get it. Metal songs almost never have musical and lyric narratives that line up so well. It tells a story in an interesting way. Between the alarm sirens and general mechanical and militaristic sound of the guitars, it builds a feeling of oppression. The first solo is jazzy and expressive and human, but in the second, humanity has been overtaken, leading to the dissonant digital sounding solo. The drum performance is amazing. It's a technical song, but much more accessible than Gorguts or anything like that.

god you sound like a pretentious fuck.

i don't hate on Meshuggah, every now and then they make something decent. i'm sure if i understood music theory better i'd appreciate them more, but i don't, so eh.

I don't even care for much of the rest of their catalog, as there's generally not enough melody to it. My appreciation for that song doesn't have much to do with music theory, just listening to how the parts of a song relate to the lyrical content. I don't think it's pretentious to think about the song on a level that goes beyond just a gut reaction, and I don't think it's unfair to say that someone's not getting it if they didn't put a little effort into thinking about the song.
