The awesome anime thread.

Just finished Paranoia Agent. Watched the first three episodes Friday night, really enjoyed them, watched the next four Saturday night, loved them even more, geared up to go through the rest tonight with high hopes, and it all went to shit. Disappointing. Should have just ended on a mystery after episode seven.

EDIT: To be specific, I don't mind if a villain is some kind of magical near-omnipotent metaphor that arbitrarily crosses over into reality, but if the villain also has its own conscious motive to exist, then that's bullshit. SPOILER TAGS BROKEN The girl's father was basically an ideal candidate to be killed on both levels; 1) if Maromi is viewed as a traditional conspiring evil force, the man with the knowledge should be killed before he can tell anyone and 2) if Maromi is just a symbol for being unable to deal with grief, how in the fuck did the father escape when he considered himself directly responsible for his daughter's predicament? SPOILER TAGS BROKEN I loved Magica Madoka because for all its silly explanations of the world's operation and magical wishes, it was at least very tight and self-consistent (ignoring the movie which was disappointing). This show just made bullshit up for the entire second half, and looking around other websites, it seems everyone just sucks the creator's cock cuz "lol he likes such complicated plots XD".

I saw Madoka, it was okay but didn't live up to the hype. It seemed pretty hollow beneath the visual spectacle. As a utilitarian horror story, I'll take Shinsekai Yori over it any day of the week.

I last posted in this thread 7 years ago so I just figured I'd post again about how I'm not into much anime at all.

have you seen any of satoshi kon's feature films?

No, but I just dl'ed Paprika.

Also, I've been particularly bored lately so after two failed previous attempts, I just watched FLCL last night. It was alright, cute at its best.

Been watching Higurashi When They Cry with my roommate lately. It's like if Stephen King did an anime. Pretty enjoyable, and fucked up, just the way I like it.

no love for FLCL's arsenal of phallic imagery?! what are you, some kind of hetero or something

i quite like PAPRIKA but PERFECT BLUE is easily his best imo, and my favourite feature length animé ever (i'm no hardcore animé fan admittedly). not sure how you feel about lynch but PERFECT BLUE is uncannily similar to MULHOLLAND DRIVE in many ways and came three years before. aronofsky notoriously worships it, owns the rights to it and 'borrows' scenes from it for his movies, which is a dubious honour i know. it is the kind of movie that inspires worship in a certain kind of person though (inc. myself & vegard pompey and one or two other folks who used to post around here).

MILLENNIUM ACTRESS is more light-hearted but exhilarating in its own way. i still need to see TOKYO GODFATHERS although it's reputedly his most conventional.

Castle of Cagliostro is probably the best with Laputa close second. But the Nausicaä manga is the best thing Miyazaki's ever done. Future Boy Conan is up there too.

I'm finally finishing up Revolutionary Girl Utena several months since starting it, it wasn't what I expected and there is quite a bit of filler, almost dropped it after the first five or so episodes but decided to keep watching during long periods of waiting in the lab, but these last several episodes have all been quality, nice to have a good payoff.

Also watching Chobits on and off, lol, dumber and more ecchi than I had hoped but still kinda cute and funny.

Wow, HBB those were anime I have on VHS because I watched them when I was like... 14 years old.

Btw, I still have a spot for Revolutionary Girl Utena. Utena is unique meaning it's such a period show (takes place during the French Revolution) that I don't know of any other anime like it. But if you like romantic anime types Oregairu is awesome. It's not finished yet, and it's on Hulu. I think it's one of the more realistic ones. Maison Ikkoku is also a good one too.

Hmm favorite Ghibli movie? I'd say Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, andGrave of the Fireflies. I'll check out the ones mention here though as I havent seen them (and a few havent heard of i.e. Nausicaa and Castle of Cagliostro).

Yeah I'm pretty much just watching late 90s/early 2000s stuff right now, all the stuff I heard about on forums/fansites as a kid but had no ability to see. iirc I saw a little bit of the beginning of Oregairu but it didn't seem like my kind of thing, I'll add it to the backlog anyways. (Actually trying again I definitely confused that with some other show.) I avoid most of the Rumiko Takahashi stuff just because there are a billion episodes to watch though, lol.

I did watch Pani Poni Dash really quickly last month as well, which I thought was hilarious at first but it got a little too cultural-reference-heavy for its humor by the end. Maybe a 7.5/10 for me, at least a few episodes were Nichijou-level good imo.

NieA Under 7 is the next one on my early 2000s list, don't even remember why I downloaded it.

Can't believe you only have to go one page back to find posts from 2013. You fuckers need to watch more anime.

re Ghibli: Somehow the only Ghibli film I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies, many years ago. The feels didn't get to me at all and I thought it was boring as shit.

Stuff I've watched lately:

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Another action anime by most of the same crew that worked on Attack on Titan. Caused a lot of buzz earlier this year with a stellar opening episode then proceeded to let everyone down with a pretty dumb plot and shallow characterization. I didn't start watching it until it had finished airing, so I came into it with low expectations and I enjoyed it all the way through. Great artstyle and animation, a rare work of digital animation that manages to compare in grittiness to classic cel animated stuff.

Shingeki no Bahamut: Swashbuckling fantasy pastiche with an extremely charming cast. I only wish it had allowed itself to slow down occasionally and focus more on its wonderful characters than on spectacle.

Fist of the North Star: Only watching one episode every now and then because of its episodic and repetitive nature, but I'm enjoying it. Pretty badass despite the poor animation and censorship. Plus it's got a Nozomi Aoki soundtrack, which has yet to impress me, but I expect at some point it will. If nothing else, I'll keep watching it just to hear that opening theme again.

Serial Experiments Lain: Partway through this atm. Loving the aesthetic and especially the eerie-as-fuck sound design but I feel like the narrative is playing on early fears of the internet that seem a bit dated now.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Rewatching parts 1+2 while waiting for part 4 to finish airing. Crying manly tears.

So last night I finally watched Wolf Children. Kinda disappointed if I'm honest, the animation was somewhat sketchy in places, with awkward CGI sprinkled throughout, of all Mamoru Hosoda's works this has been my least favourite.

Also, weird beastiality plot.

Re-watch it.
